IF: On Saturday night I get dressed up, put on my Rolex and drive my Prius to near West side Indy or out on the East side in the real bad neighborhoods. Let's say I just walk around the hookers and crackheads, maybe have a $100 bill sticking out of my shirt pocket, completely minding my own buisness. When (not if) someone tries to take the bill and the Rolex I just shoot them. Is that appropriate use of deadly force?

Back in the day I used to find these discussions very interesting on firearms forums. After Zimmerman they got so stupid I just quit hanging out on them. This case is a good example. It was widely accepted before Zimmerman it was not ethically appropriate for responsible gun owners (and illegal) to intentionally put myself in a situation that I had to kill someone.

On a related note. There was the case of the guy who left a pocketbook as bait in his garage (in a good neighborhood) and ended up shooting the foreign exchange student that tried to steal it. The homeowner was found guilty, IIRC.

I think Police 'bait' people. They used to have a show on called 'Bait Car', they would park a car with the keys in the ignition and just wait for someone to steal it.
As he should have been. I am just trying to make the point deadly force is very very nuanced and if you are going to be a responsible gun owner you really need to think it through. Of course a kid banging your head on the sidewalk could be a very appropriate use of deadly force, but certainly not always. It matters how you got there.
