NY Lawmakers Expected to Pass Bill Closing Double Jeopardy Loophole
New York Attorney General Letitia James is expected to send a bill to the state Legislature to close the so-called double jeopardy loophole.
By Dan M. Clark | March 12, 2019 at 01:55 PM

The law would not apply to individuals already tried and convicted, such as former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort Jr., because the so-called double jeopardy clause attaches at the start of a trial.

So, he's safe from the additional State charges.

How is it double jeopardy do charge him with residential mortgage fraud, attempted residential mortgage fraud, conspiracy, falsifying business records and scheme to defraud. None of these charges have been charged before anywhere.... Looks like Mueller left them aside for this very reason.

New York's State Prisons Are Brutal and Deadly!

I pretty sure Manafort will do well in them?!! When he goes to one these prisons, Manafort should ask for protective custody?!!

New York still holds about 3,600 people, or 7.5 percent of its prison population, in 23-hour-a-day isolation—a rate far above the national average. These are the kind of prisons where you go in bitching and come out switching!

Maybe they will give an ostrich jumpsuit?!!

I rest well,

but if I was a liberal suffering from TDS, I'd be ashamed at finding glee in a man being persecuted, locked away from his wife because of his affiliation with someone I simply dint's like.

God has a place for people like that, let he who is without sin cast the first stone

Baby dear, this man will be locked away from his wife because of his criminal activities. Now, whose fault is that?

Yes to double jeopardy. From what I understand, it was in his interest to plead guilty (though charges were never lodged back then) to as much as possible in case a situation arose like this one. Likely these will go nowhere. But, I'm sure the fake media is orgasmic over this without understanding.

Guess it depends on what the charges are. If they are different than the ones he was indicted for (and later pled guilty to), it's not double jeopardy, if my understanding is correct.

I see that as well. The lingering question for me then is why the heck did he and his lawyers all agree it was good for him to plead guilty ahead of time to those state charges up front?
I guess there's more to this.

Original federal charges:
Fraud/bank fraud (income, debt and the nature of his real estate properties)
False income tax returns (failing to report this income on his income tax returns, and falsely claiming he had no authority over those foreign accounts)
Failed to file foreign bank account reports (known as FBARs, with the Treasury Department to disclose his control over his overseas accounts)

New state charges:
Attempted mortgage/bank fraud, conspiracy, falsifying business records and residential mortgage fraud, falsifying business records of overseas bank accounts

They're basically the same.
These newer charges were all what he was being investigated for (by N.Y. no less) back around March of 2017. This must have been when he pled guilty ahead of time.
Manafort's legal team is likely to challenge the new indictment on double-jeopardy grounds, arguing the charges brought against Manafort in New York are the same as the ones the former Trump campaign chairman went on trial for in Virginia.

And, Tony Podesta was Manafort's partner. When they were told they needed to register as foreign agents, they both did to avoid problems. Only, difference? Podesta got a pass.

plea bargain for sentence running concurrently.........."you people are going to be so disappointed".......

Where do you get that shit? He has 7.5 now. He will get a bunch more, this time, beyond Daffy's pardoning range. Manafort is a horrible criminal with a long list of crimes, many he confessed to. Many more he was found guilty. And you will defend him. Yeah you wil.l His trial and results were shown . But you will still defend him. What is wrong with you?

So all the crimes he confessed to are just plans to break up his family. He did nothing wrong, but the courts were intended to hurt his family. Money laundering., Bank fraud, and all those crimes were made up by the courts. Boy it is tough to be a blameless Repub and get nailed for crimes you do not commit.

You are not well.
