No, what got us to this point has been a steady and concerted effort by Conservatism to poison the discourse and debate while pushing failed ideas and bankrupt ideologies on everyone.

The idea that "government is the problem" has only been around for about 40 years, and then that was magnified in the 90's by Republicans, with an assist from Talk Radio, that pushed Conservatism to the point where they consider any opposition to them as illegitimate, and their belief system as infallible.

Hyperpartisanship started in the 90's with Newt, but its genesis harkens back to the John Birch Society and the segregationists, both of whom didn't consider their political opposition as legitimate, nor the people in that opposition as legitimate citizens.

You can draw a direct line from the segregationists of the 60's, through the Religious Right in the 70's and 80's, to the Gingrich Congress of the 90's, to Bush the Dumber, to the teabags, to Trump. In fact, most of the people responsible for all that had a hand in every one of those re-brands.

So this is a case of one side broke it, not both. No one forced those people to support segregation. No one forced those people to staple teabags to their faces and scream about birth certificates. It was all by choice, and it was all done to advance very narrow interests at everyone else's expense.

It's not something that should be forgiven or forgotten. Because they're going to do it again with another gimmick.

It's always the same refrain from the cowards and centrists, who present no choices or ideas to bridge this partisan divide that you seem to think is equal on both sides. That's lazy thinking.

Only one side has been committed to the destruction of democratic norms the last 40 years, and that side ain't the leftists.

They told you "government is the problem" so they can dismantle it to the point where it only serves their goals and interests. They view any opposition to that as illegitimate, which is why so many Republicans view this election as illegitimate. Conservatives aren't against Democratic government, they're against government as an institution. They have been and have said so in plain terms for the last 40 years. If you can't see that, it's because you're choosing not to.

It seems what's more important to you than our institutions and our democracy, is people's perception of you. You have to cast yourself as a "moderate" because coming down on a position in a debate is far too risky for you.

It's easier, lazier, and simpler to posture that you're above the partisan fray when it comes to every issue, but all that posturing does is add fuel to it.

Most importantly and definitely personally, it also has the effect of lowering everyone's collective expectations of you...so if you are unable to recognize distinctions and differences, opting instead for your own version of hyperbole, we can't expect you to contribute anything meaningful to the debate. So the result of that is that you end up ignored. But maybe that's what you want? I dunno...I'm not a psychologist. But that's what I perceive from you at times.

And we were/are armed with the most important weapon; our vote.

Why do you think we've been unable to bridge the partisan divide over the last 10 years, 20 years, 30 years, 40 years?

Because the division is on the institution of government itself. One side doesn't believe in it, and the other side does. One side considers it a problem, and the other doesn't. One side doesn't see it as legitimate, and the other side does.

So what you do is force us into this partisanship by condemning both sides, while failing to acknowledge what the debate is even about. It's not about Democrat vs. Republican...it's about legitimacy. Conservatives do not view government as legitimate. That's why they do everything they can to sabotage it, whether that is starving it of revenue via tax cuts, or by deliberately breaking systems and institutions by installing corrupt leaders to run them into the ground.

Dude, Clinton was elected in 1992. The "Repubs" won the House in the 1994 in the midterms. IMO, they won as a direct result of Clintonism. Not only was a fucking draft-dodging coward and liar (e.g. "I didn't inhale") elected to the WH but he immediately jammed in gays in the military, Hillary & the Secret Squirrel Healthcare plan, gun control and NAFTA. Then there was Waco. How could the Republicans not get elected? Obviously you didn't live as an adult at that time since you don't know this. It's the difference between living history and reading about it.
