In my opinion, the most likely answer to that question has two parts. First, the two party system causes some people (idiots) to view political decisions as binary. It's right or wrong, us or them. Second, some people (idiots) have been trained by the political parties and the media to not simply disagree with "them" but also to hate "them". The easiest way to do that is to paint all liberals as Genghis Khan and all conservatives as Adolf Hitler.

I think that we do agree on many things. And you might have seen that my language is often very far from delicate. I give what I get. The poster I was talking to when you responded disagreed with me, but he wasn't a dick, so I wasn't one either. I didn't mind using some "delicate" language with him because it's easy to perceive offense in written form from strangers when none was intended. I created a JPP account to exchange ideas with people who are not like me. I just don't suffer assholes, morons, and trolls who misuse the forum.

I don't think you can; and that's one of our biggest problems. If we can't stipulate basic facts like the definition of words, then there is no meeting place. The Republican party has been overwhelmed by brain dead robots who believe in literal conspiracy theories and flatly refuse to agree on what things happened and what things didn't.
