Killers love guns

I trust the police to keep me from harm.

Look at the statistics. For every incident where a gun offered any protection at all, there are countless times that somebody lost his or her head and used a gun on a family member.

Statistics show that you are more likely to be shot if you have a gun in the house. And the person who gets shot is more likely to be the householder than the intruder. Then there is the worry caused by the plethora of guns in our society and the lack of control over them. People should not have to worry about their children while they are in school, just so some perpetual 5-year-olds can keep their cowboy-toys.

Based on FBI data, nearly 1.7 million guns have been reported stolen in the past ten years, and only 40% of those were recovered.

The missing guns, over 80% of which are taken from homes or cars, are in the hands of criminals.

I will make the same challenge that was made when they first reported the "For every incident where a gun offered any protection at all, there are countless times that somebody lost his or her head and used a gun on a family member" bullshit. Show me where this research is and who did it?? This is nothing more than a blatant lie. There is no research showing that a gun is the home is more likely to be used against the home owner. The research does not exist.

Now let me give you a few facts and the documentation to back them up.

"Americans use firearms to defend themselves from criminals at least 764,000 times a year. This figure is the lowest among a group of 9 nationwide surveys done by organizations including Gallup and the Los Angeles Times."

"Study: “Armed Resistance to Crime: The Prevalence and Nature of Self-Defense with a Gun.” By Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz. Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology (Northwestern University School of Law), 1995. Accessed at http://www.saf.org/LawReviews/KleckAndGertz1.htm.

b) The study states: “Eleven of the surveys permitted the computation of a reasonable adjusted estimate of [Defensive Gun Use] frequency. Two surveys for which estimates could not be produced were the Cambridge Reports and the Time/ CNN. Neither asked the [Defensive Gun Use] question of all [respondents]; thus, it would be sheer speculation what the responses would have been among those [respondents] not asked the [Defensive Gun Use] question. All of the eleven surveys yielded results that implied over 700,000 uses per year.” [Table 1 lists these studies and various facts about their methodologies. Eight of the 11 studies mentioned above were nationwide surveys. Among these, the range of defensive gun uses per year is 764,000 - 3,609,000. The 9th nationwide survey is the one this study is based upon. It was conducted with the most precise criteria off all such studies, and estimates that Americans use firearms to defend themselves from criminals between 1,900,000 and 2,500,000 times per year.]

Florida adopted a right-to-carry law in 1987. At the time the law was passed, critics predicted increases in violence. The founder of the National Organization of Women, Betty Friedan stated: "lethal violence, even in self defense, only engenders more violence."

When the law went into effect, the Dade County Police began a program to record all arrest and non arrest incidents involving concealed carry licensees. Between September of 1987 and August of 1992, Dade County recorded 4 crimes committed by licensees with firearms. None of these crimes resulted in an injury. The record keeping program was abandoned in 1992 because there were not enough incidents to justify tracking them.

Editorial. "The case of the outgunned thug." Washington Times National Weekly Edition, January 5-11, 1998.

Lott, John R. Jr. and Mustard, David B. "Crime, Deterrence, and Right-to-Carry Concealed Handguns." University of Chicago School of Law, 7/26/96.

Florida adopted a right-to-carry law in 1987. Between 1987 and 1996 the following changes occurred in Florida and in the USA.

In Florida the homicide rate dropped 36%. In the USA it dropped .4%. The firearm homicide rate in Florida dropped 37%. In the USA it went up 15%.

Firearms account for 1.5% of fatal accidents in the USA. It comes well behind motor vehicles, fall, poisonings, fires and choking.

Firearms account for 2.7% of fatal accidents foir children 14 and under. So 97.3% of fatal accidents involving children are NOT firearm related.

And my favorite little tidbit: "In 1982, a survey of imprisoned criminals found that 34% of them had been "scared off, shot at, wounded or captured by an armed victim."".

Study: “Armed Resistance to Crime: The Prevalence and Nature of Self-Defense with a Gun.” By Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz. Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology (Northwestern University School of Law), 1995. Accessed at http://www.saf.org/LawReviews/KleckAndGertz1.htm.

c) The study states: “Nevertheless, in a ten state sample of incarcerated felons interviewed in 1982, 34% reported having been ‘scared off, shot at, wounded or captured by an armed victim.’”

There is no evidence that the 2nd Amendment was designed to protect an individual right to bear arms.

The 2nd Amendment established the communal right of the people to have a state military force and the 1st Amendment guarantees "the right of the people peaceably to assemble."

Gunlovers claim that the Founders intended for armed citizens to turn their guns on the government; this has never been tolerated, and the United States has prosecuted rebels.

Concern for safety and security has always been a communal one. Law enforcement has long been the answer for personal threats; American law has always viewed vigilantism and illicit use of guns as criminal despite the popularity of fictional gunlover heroes like Rambo and Dirty Harry.

To claim that the 2nd Amendment guarantees the right of every individual to own weapons of any description flies in the face of logic and fact.

The United States is #1 in per-capita gun deaths among industrial nations.

Attorney General Holder and President Obama want to help us change that.

If you expect the police to protect you then you are totally misguided.

The police spend 90% of their time investigating crimes after they happen. They do very little to prevent crimes.

In the rural area where I live, the average response time for law enforcement is approximately 20 minutes. Set a timer and look at what you could do in 20 minutes.

In suburbs the police response time can average 10 minutes. If someone is in your home and threatening your loved ones, 10 minutes is a VERY long time.

My work takes me on the road. My wife and daughter are home alone the majority of the time. My wife is 5'2" and about 120 to 130 pounds. Please explain what she should do if some large male breaks into our home when I am gone?? A Taser is great if its just one person coming in. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of meth labs busted in our area. Which tells me there is a significant meth presence in our area. So the possibility of a home invasion is very real. Right now she and my daughter are both able to defend themselves. But you (and people like you) are doing your best to try and remove that ability.

The Bill of Rights was never about the rights of the states. It is specifically written to protect the rights of the people.

No matter how you want to interpret the first phrase of the 2nd amendment, the words "...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" are very clear. It is the right of the people.

Using a gun to protect your family and home is certainly not vigilantism. And a citizen using deadly force to protect his home and family has always been viewed as a right and as the right thing to do.

GUN VIOLENCE: THE STAGGERING STATISTICS

Economic Cost of Gun Violence: $100 Billion annual overall cost
Most victims are uninsured (debts are paid by public taxpayers)

(Cook & Ludwig) Breakdown in Cost by Incident
$22,400 each for unintentional shooting $18,400 each for gun assault injuries
$5,400 each by suicide

(Ted R. Miller & Mark A. Cohen ;The Cost of Gunshot & Stab wounds’’ Accident analysis and Prevention 1997)

Indirect Cost: (re: lost of productivity, mental healthcare, emergency transport, and insurance administration)
$2.8 Million per firearm fatality $249,000 per hospitalization for gunshot victim
$73,000 per emergency room visit for released gunshot victims

(Phillip J. Cook, Gun Violence, ;The Real Cost; Oxford University Press 2000)
Estimated Annual Treatments for Gunshot Victims:
$100-$126 billion per year (Miller & Cohen) (Linda Gunderson, ;The Financial Cost of Gun Violence; Annals of Internal Medicine 1999)

Children and Firearms:
More than 10 children, and teenagers 19 and under, are killed by guns EVERYDAY, and many more are wounded.
77% of murdered juveniles 13-19 are killed by firearms 39% of households have a gun, 24% are handguns Annually 1,409 children and teenagers have taken their own lives with guns
Guns kept in the home for self protection are 22x’s more likely to kill a family member or friend than to kill in self defense (;Facts For Families; July 2004)

The Comparison of Gun Violence in the US and other countries -- the total of murders by handguns: 11,789 United States
373 Germany
151 Canada
57 Australia 54 England & Wales (total)
19 Japan *These numbers only account for homicides, does not include suicides; (The Brady Campaign to prevent Gun Violence)

MORE SOBERING FACTS;
Among 26 industrialized nations, 86% of gun deaths among children under the age of 15 occurred in the United States . (The Brady Campaign to prevent Gun Violence)
Contrary to beliefs young children possess the physical strength to fire a gun 25% 3-4 year olds, 70% 5-6 year olds, 90% 7-8 year olds including most semi- automatic handguns. (Christoffel Naurecka, Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine 1995)
Taxpayers pay more than 85% of medical cost for treatment of firearm related injuries. (;The Cost of Hospitalization for Firearm Injuries; Jama vol.260 November 25,1998, Abstract Journal of Trauma February 1995)
In a 10-year span, 633 law enforcement officers were feloniously killed by firearms in the US ; a handgun was the murder weapon in78% (492 victims) of those murders; of the remainder, rifles killed 106 officers and shotguns killed 35. In total 253 slained officers were equipped with armor as well. (US Dept. of Justice)
In a 19 year time span (1977-1996) the firearm industry produced 85,644,715 firearms.

39,024,786 handguns 26,651,062 rifles
19,969,867 shotguns *These are reflections of the numbers produced in the US alone.(Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms)
While handguns account for only 1/3 of all firearms owned in the US , they account for more than 2/3 of all firearm related deaths each year. (Lee Kellerman ;The Epidemiology Basis for Prevention of Firearm Injuries 1991)
Every 2 years more Americans die from firearm injuries than the total number of American soldiers killed during the 8 year Vietnam War. (CDC National Center for Health Statistics Report 1999)
Teens & Easy Access to Guns

39% of teens know someone who has been shot before 37% of teens know someone they can get guns from
27% of teens know a gun is kept in their house, apartment, or car (Teenage Research Unlimited 2003) More than 3,500 students were expelled from school in 1998-1999 for bringing a gun to school, 43% of them were in elementary or junior high school. This means that in a 40 week period an average of 88 children per week nationwide are expelled for having guns at school.
*These figures only include those students who were caught.
(US Dept. of Education 1998-1999)
· During 1999 52% of all murder victims younger than the age of 18 were killed by firearms, and 82% of these victims were between the ages of 13-19 years old. (FBI Uniform Crime Report)

59% of students in grades 6-12 know where to get a gun and 2/3 of these students say they can acquire a gun within 24hours. ( Harvard University )
Most Murder Victims ages 12-17 are Black: Of the 24,950 juveniles ages 12-17 who were murdered annually between 1980-2000 12,880 were Black.

So ALL THESE FACTS are trumped by your irrational fears of a home invasion that hasn't happened and most likely never will?

I thought the reason you cling to your guns is to overthrow the elected government because you lost the vote...

I thought the reason you cling to your guns is to overthrow the elected government because you lost the vote...

Oh please, if you want to talk about irrational fears then start with your own irrational fear that my guns are a danger to any law abiding citizen.

And you do not know how I voted. I am not a republican or a democrat, so save the "you lost" for someone else.

Your facts trump nothing. I don't give a rats ass what happens in Germany or the UK (as long as Charver is ok).

I am not expecting a home invasion. But I don't expect a fire either, but I still have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.

There are over 2 million burglaries a year in the USA. So its not a rare occurrance. Your plans would leave people helpless in the face of the criminal element.

So you are scared of crime and that's why you think you need guns?

The causes of crime are many and will not be solved and may in fact get worse by simply allowing everyone to carry guns.

Let's compare: New York is one of the safest large cities in the United States. New Yorkers don't carry guns legally. Dallas, near the top nationally in violent crime rates, is in a state which allows frightened people to carry weapons to "protect themselves". It doesn't work.

If statistics demonstrate that tough gun-control laws produce high rates of crime, then why don’t other industrialized nations with sensible gun laws have high crime rates?

Britain, France, Germany and Japan all have much lower crime rates, especially murders, than the United States.

They also ban or restrict private gun ownership. Japan, with the most intelligent gun controls, has a homicide rate 90 percent lower than ours.

With more than 222 million guns, - including 76 million handguns designed purely to kill -, the United States has the highest gun ownership rate, giving us the dubious distinction of being the most heavily armed nation on the earth.

Why do you feel so unsafe?

Part of the reason is the fear-mongering of the gun lobby, which stands to lose lots of money when gun-control happens.

Another reason is the violence that we are fed by the rightwing media, especially Fox television, plus movies and video games, which glorify guns and violence and make lots of money.

The roots of the problem are also in the atmosphere of an unjust society which believes that the way to solve a problem is through violence, whether it is on the streets of the ghetto or in the Muslim world.

Allowing fearful people like you to openly own guns sends the signal that you who live in mistrust and fear have more rights than the poor.

How much better would it be to be known as a society that works to alleviate significant factors in crime such as poverty and unemployment, and to create a nation in which we demonstrate our strength through character rather than guns?

That's why I support Attorney Gerneral Holder and President Obama.

There is no evidence that the 2nd Amendment was designed to protect an individual right to bear arms.

The 2nd Amendment established the communal right of the people to have a state military force and the 1st Amendment guarantees "the right of the people peaceably to assemble."

still waiting for you to show me any shred of pre-1900 evidence that the right to bear arms is not an individual right. you've been supplied with numerous pieces that proves it IS an individual right.

I do not fear crime. I fear a government that demands that I be disarmed when I have committed no crimes.

I fear for my wife and daughter when I leave for 5 days. I also fear for them when they drive on the highway.

I use my guns for a variety of activities besides self defense. I hunt. My family target shoots. And we help our neighbors by removing varmints that destroy crops & livestock.

"The roots of the problem are also in the atmosphere of an unjust society which believes that the way to solve a problem is through violence, whether it is on the streets of the ghetto or in the Muslim world. "

I am not taking violence to anyone. I am responding to violence aimed at me or my family. If you could guarantee that there are no armed criminals, I would MIGHT be willing to entertain discussions of restricting firearms. But you cannot, so that is beside the point.

"Allowing fearful people like you to openly own guns sends the signal that you who live in mistrust and fear have more rights than the poor."

What? I am claiming no more rights than anyone. I have no more rights than the poor. I just have the money (as a result of my own hard work) to buy a means of protecting myself. I am harming no one except those who try to harm someone first.

But what kind of society is it where there is so much crime, so many murders, so many threats, so many frightened people that everyone thinks they need a gun?
My god! What kind of society have you got in America?
Every single American, pro gun and anti gun, should be too embarrassed to ever leave your shores. Civilised nation? My freakin' arse. You have become a drug taking, porn producing, stealing and killing society with no rights WHATSOEVER to pontificate over ANY other nation.
Hang your heads and hope that your new administration can breed in you an acceptable existence as you share this planet with decent people.

Concern for safety and security of ones home has always been an individual one.

Using a gun to protect your family and home is certainly not vigilantism. And a citizen using deadly force to protect his home and family has always been viewed as a right and as the right thing to do.

I am ashamed that America has not joined the civilized world before now.

Now that true progressives are in power, that will change despite the Neanderthal posturing of the rightwing gunlovers who admit that they are just scared all the time. Our police and other government agencies must reassure these frightened people that the causes of crime are being redressed.

The problem is more one of perception than actuality.

Most of us who own guns are not crouching in our houses, armed to the teeth, in fear of an invasion.

I have 3 fire extinguishers in my house. I am not living in fear of fire, but I do like to be prepared for problems.

I have a loaded handgun in a lockbox. My wife and I know the combination and can open it in seconds. We don't spend a lot of time worrying about it.

We do enjoy shooting. We go to the range as often as we can, and the handgun goes with us. But we tend to shoot the other guns more.

I hunt and we eat what I kill (except the coyotes). Those guns, if I were of a criminal mind, would be far more dangerous than the handguns I have.

Also, this complete ban of guns would mean a huge loss of revenue for the state's conservation programs. No hunting means no revenue.

And there are many species of animal that would then overpopulate in a rapid manner, thereby destroying huge tracts of habitat.

No, your idea is ridiculous and will never happen.

Keep dreaming.

YOu keep talking about the police taking care of things. But what the police do is investigate crimes AFTER they are committed. You are willing to allow people to be murdered, raped, robbed and more??

Ridiculous.

And, despite true progressives being in power, there is no way you have the votes to repeal the 2nd amendment.

Fire extinguishers were not designed to kill your fellow creatures.

Hunting is cruel and unnecessary.

The complete ban of guns will mean a huge loss of revenue for the funeral and healthcare industry.

It's your country. You are doing a great job of screwing it up. Carry on.

Hunting is cruel and unncessary.

And where did you get this little pearl of wisdom?? I am guessing you made it up. There is absolutely no truth to it.

If you want to debate with facts, thats fine. But try sticking to facts and don't just make up shit you know nothing about.
