Virginia cops pepper-sprayed Black and Latino Army officer

Hello guno,

who had hands raised during traffic stop

A U.S. Army officer is suing two Virginia police officers after a December traffic stop in which the officers drew and pointed their weapons, pepper-sprayed him and used a slang term to suggest he would face execution as he purposefully held both hands aloft in attempts to defuse the situation.

Police in Windsor, in southeast Virginia, have yet to issue any comment about the incident involving second lieutenant Caron Nazario, a Black and Latino man who was in uniform when officers ordered him to exit his Chevrolet Tahoe as he held his hands up through the driver’s side window outside a local gas station.

These guys are obviously on a power trip. It's disgusting to see that kind of abuse of power. They deserve to be held criminally responsible for assault. They had no right to treat him like that. The guy was completely cooperative. Those police officers do not belong on the force. There needs to be far better training.

Nazario is obviously lucky to be alive, and only because he was so totally subservient.

The point is that this has become 'political' rather than a rational discussion.

American Military Officer: "The Lt. stated he was afraid to get out of his car "
Jack: If the guy is too frightened to get out of his car, he shouldn't be in the American Military.

Why is this guy in the American Military? What is he 'Defending'? Muhammad Ali had a Position on America. He refused to wear the Uniform. Why is 'Lt. What's going on' wearing an American Uniform?

from the article:

His eyes shut in pain as he resisted the impulse to wipe them, Nazario told the officers: “I don’t even want to reach for my seatbelt – can you please…. My hands are out, can you please – look, this is really messed up,”

Common sense at that point with police is that this isn't a felony stop anymore and they knew it when they threatened his career if he made an issue of it.

Timestamp 6:20 shows video from Navario's dash cam. He is completely cooperative with the police, and very wisely resisting reaching back inside his vehicle while at gunpoint.

The ridiculous officer orders him to get out, but he is belted into his seat, and cannot do so while holding his hands where they can be seen.

The police officer is issuing impossible commands as he holds Navario at gunpoint.

Then, even though Navario is responding to every impossible demand, the police officer pepper sprays him in the face.

STILL, Navario holds his hands where they can be seen.

And all of this over a traffic stop because the car he had just purchased had the temporary tag inside tinted windows, but could clearly be seen once Navario wisely pulled into a well lit area before stopping.

Total abuse of power!

So he had a gun at his right leg (legally), they are telling him they are going to shoot him if they don't see his hands. What would happen if he reached to undo his seatbelt which the clasp is located where?

This was a clear over reaction by police over an illegal stop (tint is legal in VA and the temp tag was also displayed in accordance with the law), I for one also pull over in safe places for officers saftey.

Hello Taft2016,

OK, I listened up until the point that the narrator said that Navario didn't slow down. That is wrong. Navario claims in his lawsuit he slowed down and drove very slowly to a well lit area.

So you saw the video of the police officer getting murdered.

You like dead cops. Duly noted.

:palm: this sounds good in theory, but reality is going to be that if a municipality/county/state enact that kind of legislation, you end up with no law enforcement........

So the only reason anyone is a cop is because of the pension?

Sounds like we don't really need police at all, then, since they're not doing their jobs for the love of the law.

The way the cops were screaming contradictory commands I don't blame him, guy has a gun in your face screaming "you are going to ride the lightning if I don't see your hands" and "get out of the vehicle" what would you do? your seatbelt is still on.

When I get pulled over, and am told to 'get out of the vehicle', I get out of the vehicle. I don't act like I'm completely bewildered and begin parroting "What is going on". Is that what they taught YOU in the Military?

Systemically America's law enforcement is quite good, despite the exaggeration of anecdotes by the media blown up and applied universally to police.

Benefits are needed to attract candidates to a job that doesn't pay all that much, works 24/7, and often keeps its staff away from their families on holidays.

To me it seems very unreasonable if the cops is saying he should fear for his life and that if he doesnt see his hands that he would "ride the lightning", cause why? how you gonna get that seat belt off with a cop acting like he's in faluja?

This was about the 10th time he had to tell the guy to get out of the vehicle. Eventually, Pepper spray helped this individual understand the English language.

Frightened over tinted windows and a temp tag that is clearly visible?

In any state where tint is illegal you go to the parking lot of any police station and you will see almost all the officers personal cars blacked out.

'Frightened' because they have no idea who they are dealing with.

This guy is a Dumbass. He should be kicked out of the Military. Glad YOU think he is your Hero and want to follow in his footsteps.

Quite good at what? I would say the fact that America has the highest % of incarcerated people is a failure of American law enforcement, not a success of it.

Cops don't prevent crime, they just investigate crime once it occurs.

The best way to prevent crime is to improve the economy and offer good paying jobs so that people don't feel desperate enough to turn to crime.

OK a few things:

1. If you need to offer benefits in order to attract candidates, I'd ask to where are those candidates going that they need to be lured to law enforcement?

2. The job pays more ($67K) than the average median income in the US ($53K).

3. Cops do not work 24/7, they work in shifts. If they are working 24/7, then they are banking serious overtime.

4. Cops are called away from their families during holidays? That doesn't sound right. Every single cop works on Christmas? Hardly. And when they do work on holidays, they get time and a half.

he had a temp tag visible 3 times in the video and the other officer said he did see it.

If the tag was visible and noted, what other reason did the cops have to pull him over unless they didn't see it until they had him pulled over?
I'm trying to make a rational opinion from looking at both sides. I would think testosterone would have been involved from both sides. No?

false narrative, millions upon millions of traffic stops happen daily, and most officers never draw their guns in their entire career, if the cops are afraid of tinted windows and temp plates, they should not be cops.

Once they pulled into the lighted area and saw the temp tag they should have pivoted from a felony stop to a regular stop, further evidence they should have pivoted is seeing the man in uniform.

Cops should also realize that if the person delays pulling over until a highly lit public spot it is a move of respect and safetly for the officer, not an attempt to flee or avoid detection of a felonious act.

Cops also should respect the uniform of the military as they would their own uniforms, if he was wearing a police uniform from another town instead of an army uniform, do you think they would have behaved the same?

The problem I have with this stop is severalfold, including the contradictory commands and the threats of violence and death if they don't "see his hands" and "get out of the car" while he was seat belted with a legal gun at his right side.

I think had he went to get the seat belt, the fat cop holding his gun like snoop dog had he seen the gun would have shot him on the spot.
