Yes, cops do indeed get brought up on charges for abusing their power. Does it happen every time they do so? no. Nor does every racist professor get arrested every time they go off on cops who are doing their job.

the few times I have seen police officers actually charged with crimes have usually happened when the evidence is so overwhelmingly obvious that it causes an uproar with the people. Almost all other times, if it can be whitewashed over, it will be.
In their home? No. For speech? No.
That's why the charges were dropped. Just do a google search for Massachsuetts disorderly conduct statute and see what the requirements are. Even assuming Gates did everything that the police and others are claiming he did, his conduct doesn't come close to meeting the statute.

Somehow i doubt you see all of the charges brought against cops by civilians. In cases where they are just verbally over the line, they will probably receive no reprimand/punishment, just like this professor had the charges dropped.
When individuals get out of line, they tend to get arrested, arraigned, and then based on the individuals past, many times get released with the charges dropped.
this whole notion that you can behave in any manner you want without consequences towards police conducting an investigation is simply ridiculous.
This whole notion that you can be arrested for disorderly conduct in your own home for saying stuff to the police that they take offense to is simply ridiculous and has been rejected by the courts time and time again as ridiculous.

I deal with the police everyday, and it is yes sir /no sir, if they want my ID I show them if they ask my name I tell them, whether they are black or white
But I do agree with you , the cops will be suspended, cause of the situation not because they did anything wrong
