The fertilizer (in the form of BS) is coming from the dwindling, defeated and desperate Right.
Making sure every American has access to high quality health care is one of the most important challenges of our time. The number of uninsured Americans is growing, premiums are skyrocketing, and more people are being denied coverage every day. A moral imperative by any measure, a better system is also essential to rebuilding the shattered economy that George Bush left for President Obama to fix.
BS Lie #1: President Obama wants a big-government health care system where faceless Washington bureacrats control which doctors patients can see and limit the treatments and cures a doctor can prescribe. (BS.)
BS Lie #3: President Obama wants to dictate a top-down system where bureaucrats ration health care. (BS. The plan will require insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions and will offer subsidies to those who cannot afford to pay their premiums.)
BS Lie #4: President Obama wants to put insurance companies out of business by creating a Washington-run monopoly to control health care. (BS. If private insurers say that the marketplace provides the best quality health care, then why is it that the government, which they say can't run anything, suddenly is going to drive them out of business? Reform is not a monopoly, it's a competitor. President Obama is proposing to reform the existing private system that middle and lower income Americans love to hate.)
BS Lie #5: You won't be able to keep your current health care. (BS. Individuals and small businesses would get to pick either the public plan or a private one through a new kind of insurance purchasing pool called an exchange. For those keen on keeping their current private insurance, President Obama has promised to cut premiums by up to $2,500 annually, money that will be saved by investing in prevention, importing generic drugs, and implementing a digital-record health system that will cut administrative costs.)
BS Lie #6: President Obama's plan will dictate the doctors you can see and the treatment you can receive. (BS. Treatment decisions will be made between doctor and the patient, not like today with an insurance company/HMO in the middle.)
Lie #7: Obama's plan will cut hundreds of millions of dollars from seniors on Medicare. (BS. Rising heath care costs under the current system necessitate trade offs and budget cuts that have a negative effect on the budget. Our ability to control health costs is directly affecting our ability to fully fund, among other things, the Medicare program.)
BS Lie #8: President Obama will bankrupt the Treasury with trillions more in deficit spending. (BS. This is happening under today´s system. Doing nothing will cost us more. Reform will be deficit-neutral. Much of the funding will come from the pockets of America's wealthiest citizens, who will pay their fair share. This will be accomplished by rolling back the Bush tax cuts for Americans earning more than $250,000 per year and retaining the estate tax at it's 2009 level.)
BS Lie #9: President Obama will raise taxes on middle class families and businesses. (BS. Only those with an annual income above $250,000 will be affected. The plan also includes a tax credit for small business owners who provide insurance to their employees.)
"I suffer no illusions that this will be an easy process. It will be hard. But I also know that nearly a century after Teddy Roosevelt first called for reform, the cost of our health care has weighed down our economy and the conscience of our nation long enough. So let there be no doubt: health care reform cannot wait, it must not wait, and it will not wait another year."
President Barack Obama, February 24, 2009
