Krugman: All That Stands In Way Of Universal Health Care Is Greed, Lies And Gullibili

That's a pretty big "besides". He maintained many of the socialistic programs of his predecessors and made no effort to curtail any of them except for a half-hearted attempt at partial privatization of SS, which he immediately abandoned when the going got tough.

Reagan didn't kill all the welfare programs while he had the chance either. It would be so easy to spin the publicity of killing medicare; all you'd have to do is show an elderly woman dying, and Reagan's approval would've been at 1% tommorrow. It's really absurd to ask them to kill medical care to the poor and elderly, or to remove food stamps... etc... they can do that in China, but not in a free country.

(One of the few socialist programs the federal government runs is the post office, authorized by our founding fathers. Welfare is not socialism; it's a common sense alternative to both socialism and free market magic.)

No it's not. Programs like SS may be great for America. They may be the moral thing to do and it might be the financially responsible thing to do, but it still socialism. The beginning of wisdom is calling things by their proper names.

So when Thomas Paine proposed the guaranteed minimum income in the 1700's... was that socialism? Socialism really refers to the nationalization of industry to redistribute its profits to the workers. In my interpretation, that doesn't mean welfare. Socialism is not "proper name" for welfare, it's a dysphemism.

Sorry you missed my edit:

It's really absurd to ask them to kill medical care to the poor and elderly, or to remove food stamps... etc... and that's one of the reasons I don't think conservatism is ever going to be able to significantly curtail costs.

Well they could but you're right it's not politically feasible even if it is constitutionally the proper thing to do. Cowards.

That's why I find it hilarious that Republicans are all of a sudden throwing around the word socialism again. They didn't care so much while it was their presidents maintaining and expanding the welfare state, but suddenly when it's a Democrat doing it they are free market constitutional purists.

No, like it no more Bush's buddies and health care!

are you implying that some who voted because of 'no more Bush's buddies' may have had no opinion on health care?......novel thought!.....this could revolutionize politics....multi-issue campaigning!.....

Or they may have had an idea on health care, also. Humans are an amazing species, and women especially, who can handle two thought processes at the same time!
