Bush spent without raising taxes. We won't.

House leaders are considering a new surtax proposal, which creates three new tax brackets beginning in 2011.

The initial surtax rates are 1% for households with incomes from $350,000 to $500,000, 1.5% for those with an annual take from $500,000 to $1 million, and 5.4% for households getting over $1 million per year.

These are marginal rates, so a household getting $400,000 would pay $500 in additional taxes, 1% multiplied by the $50,000 in income above the $350,000 threshold.

A household raking in $1 million in a year would be responsible for an additional $9,000 in taxes.

In all, just 1.2% of American households will be affected.

We will raise taxes on the rich, which is the opposite of Bush's tactic.

Do not confuse me with Cheney who said "Reagan proved that defecitd does not matter" (perhaps not an exact quote, but exactly accurate).

I am for a balanced budget, always have been. Just no way to do it in the middle of a great recession.
How about the over 3 trillion the feds have pumped into the banking system?
I was against that too.
The only big spending I have been for is health care reform and the stimulus package, which was not quite what I wanted but closer than any republican would have done.

Why tell me did Bush run 5 trillion in debt during a boom economy? the recession in 200-2001 was just barely a recession and might not have been at all in view of the revised economic data.

Obama at least now has a reason to run a defecit, for a while at least.
 
This is to funny, it is GW's fault, damn how long are we going to blame him, I guess until another Rep is elected, Everyone cried the deficit is so high when GW was in office, in fact how many times did Obama himself say it, and of course along with his saying GW was over spending he promised not to raise taxes on anyone making less than 250,000 a year, Get a clue, Obama is a liar, he is spending money in the name of fixing the economy, lol, yea breaking ice in Iceland is really helping, saving a poor endangered mouse in Cali wow that was a real economy boost, Get real people

What I say is if the republicans had not added around 95% of our national debt just from Reagan onwards, spending now for the recession would not be such an issue.

When Reagan took office our total national debt was just under 1 trillion dollars.

And yes congress deserves blame too, but republicans gained numbers in congress during that period as well.
And the president can always veto.
 
The debt and the deficit are deep concerns of mine. I am very worried about federal spending.

Probably what you end up having to do in terms of structural reforms realistically is you probably have to set up some sort of commission or mechanism that reports back with the prospect of maybe locking in a pledge for action. Everything is going to have to be on the table.

Obama raised his deficit projection another $2 trillion dollars today. Please tell me how a pill bill signed in 2003 or 2004 is going to cause Obama to raise his deficit projections six years later? The pill costs have already been included in ongoing projections. The Iraq War? Obama is coming close to ending it. He's removing troops. That would be lowering costs not raising them. And Bush's tax cuts will expire according to Obama which supposedly will bring in more money. How will that add to the deficit?

You used to try and call Damo out and say the closet door is opening. Look in the mirror my friend. You claim you have no hero's and you don't worship Obama. Congratulations. But you defend him like the partisan hacks you attempt to mock.
