Official: Russia scraps plan to deploy missiles near Poland

The fact is that all countries, including our own, are going to act in their own interest. Our interests are best served by taking actions that advance our security and economic well-being while improving our standing in the family of nations.

Just 19 percent of Europeans interviewed in the Marshall Fund survey a year ago supported Bush’s botched handling of international affairs

Now 77 percent approve of President Obama’s skillful foreign policy.

More than 90 percent of Germans have a favorable view of President Obama, an 80 percentage point increase over Bush.

Pew Research polling also indicates that America’s standing worldwide has improved vastly since President Obama’s historic victory.

In Germany, 64 percent expressed favorable views of the United States, up from 31 percent a year ago.

In Indonesia, 63 percent now approve of America, compared with 37 percent last year.

France, Britain, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Nigeria and other countries saw double-digit increases.

Increases were registered in India, South Korea, Japan and China.

Arab countries saw modest changes, but Russia, Turkey, Poland and Pakistan were largely unmoved.

The claim that Polish and Czech people wanted the system is just another spurious piece of bullshit emanating from the right wing blogs.

In Poland this move by the Obama administration is viewed as a total failure and a sign of weakness, especially in the eyes of Russia.

In my opinion, the Americans have totally screwed us over.
It's a gigantic lose-lose situation for Poland and the Czech Republic.
Because of this whole deal with the US, our relationship with Russia has been seriously damaged and now we have ended up with nothing.
For my country it would be better if the US still had Bush as president, because he would not bow before Russia, like Obama is about to.

And of course, Blabba overlooked the following:

I am very happy about this decision.

I am a local city councillor living in a town that is only about 200km from where this missile defence system was meant to be situated.

Many people here and in the area planned to house it, Pomorze, were very worried about this plan.

People were scared it would make us more of a target for terrorists and extremists.

It was only being built to protect the US, but it did not bring any safety to us, only danger. It would have made us less, not more, safe.

Our government was also trying to tell us that supporting this plan and continuing to send our troops to Iraq would be good for us financially, because we would be guaranteed contracts and so on, but we got nothing.

We were also concerned about our relations with Russia.

I don't think they have been severely affected by this, but we do need to find some common ground with Russia after this to be able to move forward.

It was a bad idea and I feel we are more safe now because of the US's decision to abandon it.[/

Bottom line: within the first year of his new term....BEFORE 9/11....the Shrub announced that the USA would no longer honor the 1972 ABM Treaty. His reasoning? "It just doesn't serves our purpose". Now the doofus NEVER gave a clear, logical reason for the renunciation...or what the hell was "our purpose" (although one can look up the PNAC and it's authors to derive that). After all, the Soviet Union no longer existed. So when the Shrub announces that a new set of missles were to be set up in Poland, the Russians naturally said WTF, and responded in kind with ramping up new military offensive weapons tests.

In reality, the proposed missle numbers would NOT be a significant deterrent a Russian assault...unless they were tactical nukes. So for Obama to scap this BS WITHOUT removing Poland from the NATO shield makes sense....something the Shrub and his willfully ignorant followers/supporters have lacked for some time.

As Obama said we ended up with nothing from Russia because there was nothing that prompted the idea of placing missiles there as far as Russia was concerned. The concern was/is about Iran and Russia didn't like the idea so why would we deliberately do something to bother them when there are alternatives?

As for appearing weak some folks use that same argument when discussing the Taliban. When people see their country blown apart and the leader caught and hung (Saddam) such an argument just doesn't cut it.

Look at what Georgia did to piss off the Russians just because the leaders there believed the US would help them.

It's fine to have allies but when certain allies start shooting off their mouth because they have US backing the next thing we know the US is dragged into another conflict and Georgia was the perfect example.

Do we want Georgia as an ally if it means conflict with Russia? Are we going to send more young men and women to the slaughter? I hope not!

PS. But I still think you're cool.

I don't trust Russia and I think Obama sold the 2 countries out and we will pay dearly for it. I'm waiting to see what the Poland Prime Minister says about this, then we can discuss it more.

I still think you are cool, too. I could never stay mad at you.:)

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia has scrapped a plan to deploy missiles in a region near Poland after President Obama dumped his predecessor's plan for a U.S. missile defense in Eastern Europe, a Russian deputy defense minister said Saturday.
Vladimir Popovkin told Ekho Moskvy radio that Obama's move has made the deployment of Iskander short-range missiles in the Kaliningrad region unnecessary.

"Reason has prevailed over ambitions," Popovkin said. "Naturally, we will cancel countermeasures which Russia has planned in response."

There had already been signals that Russia would scrap the plan after Obama's move, announced Thursday, but Popovkin's statement is the clearest announcement of it.

Russia staunchly opposed the plan by the former administration of George W. Bush to deploy 10 missile interceptors in Poland and a related radar in the Czech Republic and said if the project went ahead it would respond by deploying the Iskander missiles in its westernmost Baltic Sea region.

Obama's decision to scrap the plan was based largely on a new U.S. intelligence assessment that Iran's effort to build a nuclear-capable long-range missile would take three to five years longer than originally thought, U.S. officials said. The new U.S. missile-defense plan would rely on a network of sensors and interceptor missiles based at sea, on land and in the air as a bulwark against Iranian short- and medium-range missiles.

Medvedev hailed Obama's decision as a "responsible move," but Russian officials have given no indication yet that Moscow could edge closer to the U.S. stance on Iran. Washington is counting on Moscow to help raise pressure on Tehran over its nuclear program.

Obama is to meet with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev at the United Nations and the Group of 20 economic summit in the coming week.

Medvedev's predecessor and mentor, Vladimir Putin, who is widely believed to be continuing to call the shots as Russia's prime minister, also praised Obama's decision but challenged the U.S. to do more by canceling Cold War-era restrictions on trade with Russia and facilitating Moscow's entry into the World Trade Organization.

It has remained unclear what behind-the-scenes talks went on between Moscow and Washington before Obama's announcement. Russian officials said they had made no concessions in return.

Medvedev foreign policy adviser Sergei Prikhodko said Friday the move would require the Kremlin to "attentively consider new possibilities opening up for cooperation and interaction," but gave no indication what compromises Moscow could make.

A hand for Obama on this ... :hand:
Props! to Obama

I am sure Poland breathes easier!

Bear with me here as i have taken a few cold drinks this evening and am currently awaiting the Mayweather v. Marquez fight.

Let's get this straight shall we?

The Poles (and the Czechs) are slightly miffed that they are not going to be host to 10 interceptor missiles, which would have prevented their former occupier, Russia (nee the USSR) from recommencing ownership?

Do any of you know exactly how many intercontinental ballistic missiles Russia owns? If you don't, let me tell you it is a somewhat larger number than could have been dealt with by 10 interceptor missiles stationed in Poland (or even the other 10 stationed in the Czech Republic).

Now, perhaps we can now come back to reality?

Any Star Wars type system would be ineffective against a mass Russian nuclear launch. Luckily, the Russians will adopt the position they have maintained since the inception of the nuclear bomb - i.e. they have identified that the negatives of a nuclear holocaust slightly outweigh the positives.

We can all sleep safely in our beds despite this latest Obama decision.
Beam them up, Scottie!

I see that you've found someone else to share your profound observations about the human condition with, nearly time for another faux apology I fear.
I pray for her to the Goddess of Love, that she may be showered with a tender heart, or maybe I should call the Care Bears to aide her!

In other words, we have betrayed 2 countries that have helped us, to appease a country who has not. With Obama in this administration, we will be considered weak and at their mercy.
They don't feel betrayed and you aren't listening to logic, once again.
