It was honorable to refuse the pressure from Trump and (Goldman?) to refuse their plot knowing agreeing to do so would make him a hero among Trump supporters and doing the right thing would bring the wrath of Trump and MAGA people. He had reason to fear for his safety and refused to get in the car they sent for him.

I think Pence's actions and McCain's correction of the campaign supporter who claimed Obama was a Muslim are rare instances of politicians acting honorably.
