You don't get life for DUI, usually, especially if you don't kill anybody.
In Massachusetts, you get a mandatory year in a minimum security facility if you kill somebody in a drunk driving accident,
but that's a far cry from the horror of state prison.

As I said, incarceration should be for rehabilitation, not punishment.

You were rehabilitated, although more likely by accident [learning your lesson] than by the counseling and treatment you should have received.
I don't know how they do things in Tennessee or the south in general, so I can't really comment on that.

Possibly. In any case, what he did clearly wasn't sane, so he wasn't responsible for being mentally ill.
He should have been humanely euthanized instead of caged.
Society would still be safe from him without having to feed and shelter him,
and from his perspective, his troubles would be mercifully over.

Right. So if someone is too sick to be rehabilitated, that person should be gently and humanely euthanized, not caged.
There's no justification for punishing people for being sick.
