It was coined "assault weapon" (a fully automatic rifle) by the Germans, I believe. So yes they do exist.
But you are partially correct, no one can own one unless they go through many government hoops and expense.

But yeah, you could piss in the acorns of a whole flock of ducks with that thing (I see it's select fire, too!). I'd be curious of the barrel length and the effective range. Ducks are hard to bring down, even with a "standard barrel length" full choke shotgun.
Duck and geese hunting was one of my father's favorite hobbies. I hunted lots of ducks in my younger days. I know how hard they are to bring down.

That terminology made for good war propaganda at the time (and for good "gun grabbing" propaganda nowadays). It's just a buzzword; nothing more. The actual (meaningful) term [that describes what actually exists] is 'fully automatic rifle'.
