The Schumer shutdown slithers on

The Mighty Democrats flex their muscles from the minority and bring the wimpy republicans to their knees!!

Did you say the Republican were "mighty" and "flexing their muscles to bring the wimpy" Democrats "to their knees" when the GOP minority in the Senate blocked the DREAM Act using the same Senate rule?

The filibuster requires 60 votes to invoke cloture and end debate, allowing a minority to prevent passage of legislation. In 2010, in the minority, filibustered the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act, which aimed to provide a path to citizenship for certain undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. The vote for cloture failed 55-41, short of the 60 needed.

The filibuster has been a tool for both parties when in the minority to block legislation, as it forces the majority to secure a supermajority, which is often difficult. Data from the Senate’s historical records shows that between 2007-2010 (when Republicans were often in the minority), cloture votes frequently failed to reach 60, effectively stalling Democrat-sponsored bills.

If you don't think the Schumer Shutdown is due to Democrat incompetence/obstructionism/brinkmanship, consider that in 2022 every single Democrat in the House and every single Democrat in the Senate voted to allow the temporary, 'emergency' expanded Affordable Care Act premium subsidies to expire on December 31, 2025.

Your power of perception underwhelms. The Democrats didn't bring the Republicans to their knees; the Democrats merely prevented the government from operating.

The question was "Why is this the Schumer shutdown"? Well, that's why.

They control all three branches of government and can't even keep the lights on.

The 60-vote requirement for passing a Continuing Resolution (CR) in the U.S. Senate stems from the Senate's cloture rule, which is designed to end debate on a bill and proceed to a vote. A CR, which temporarily funds the government to prevent a shutdown, is typically subject to this rule like most other legislation.Under Senate Rule XXII, a cloture motion to end debate requires a three-fifths majority of the Senate, or 60 votes (assuming all 100 senators are present and voting).

This threshold exists to prevent filibusters, where senators could indefinitely delay a vote by holding the floor with extended debate.

Without 60 votes to invoke cloture, debate can continue, stalling the CR's passage.
