They can't be exonerated. That they assisted in an attempted coup is historical fact. But they could be acquitted. But you're right - the process is a punishment in it's own right.Even if they're exonerated or otherwise escape the penalties of the law, remember: the process is punishment.

Everyone who has seen video of the congressional hearings.
He lied to congress. No ifs, ands, or buts. Will he be judged "not guilty by reason of being a party member?" Quit possibly.
Don't be shocked if a judge won't let that video into evidence.
I have zero faith in our corrupt judicial system.
