A beginner's guide to being an atheist, by Richard Dawkins

I don't think there is a militant atheist on this board who hasn't tried to pull the trick of equating Christian belief in Jesus with ancient pagan belief in Thor, Odin, or the Sun god Ra.

That is a terrible analogy because it ignores that the intellectual basis of religions like Christianity and Buddhism are based on historical claims about historical people.
There is no such thing as a militant atheist, Cyborg.

ftfy....It would actually make me more skeptical if they were all identical. That would be strong evidence they collaborated and copied from each other.

Witness accounts never match up in detail. Any cop or police detective will tell you that.
There is no doubt that Luke and Matthew copied Mark.
Christianity makes you very angry.

Ancient authors usually mixed historical factoids with myth, allegory, hyperbole. They did not write analytical history. You are using modern standards and applying them to ancient people.

You only apply your hyper-skeptical standards to Christian authors, but to no one else. That calls into question your impartiality. I've never seen you write that historians should throw away Herodotus and the Norse Sagas because they mix mythology and hyperbole with nuggets of historical data.

I notice you did not dispute my statement that whether or not one takes walking on water literally, it does nothing to change the core essence of Christian doctrine concerning faith, grace, salvation, ethics.

As I said, Christians take the parts they like as literal and the absurd, impossible or those that don’t fit their narrative as metaphor, allegory.

I apply my standards of proof to every part of my life. Why should Christians be exempt? We don’t accept the Honest Abe or Washington cutting down a cherry tree simply on faith, but you expect that just because it’s theological in nature. Bullshit on that.

We know the Norse, Greek, Roman gods are myths. So, why do you think the Christian ones are not? Where’s the evidence?

That’s OK, dude.

But if you won’t contribute, debate or discuss, quit being such a tag along bystander on this thread, merely ditto-ing someone else’s posts. It’s pretty lame.
Awesome.

Your judgments of me are interesting. Why do you believe none of my posts on this thread haven't contributed to the OP?
Agreed some people are lame. Especially those who use strawman arguments or those who clearly only want to push their POV and never listen to others. You know, the whole overflowing cup thing.

I've listened to your beliefs that "there is no god". As @Cypress and I have discussed, we don't know and agree no one can prove it either way. He and I agree it's silly to keep going over the same exact point over and over and over again. His multiple threads on the subject are always from different angles, like different facets of the same diamond. Why do you think some people have a problem with that?

Why do you have a problem with that?

Why do you think Perry follows Cypress like a puppy?

You’re a Cypress tag alone, dude. His cheerleader.

You won’t accept my simple offer. Great. So, move on and maybe we’ll find something else, someday.

Again, like Trump himself, you picture yourself on a throne making judgements. Weird.

Your simple offer for me to attack your strawmen arguments? Again, hard pass. Let me help you understand "hard pass" since you seem to have a very narrow view of worldly topics:

a firm refusal or rejection of something (such as an offer)

I made the offer for you to put up, but I never added the shut up part.

I do now.

Put up what? Prove your strawman's are straw?

When you tell me, specifically, what you are disagreeing with in my posts, I'll be happy to reply.

You and I both know what pisses you off about me is the fact I won't agree with your B&W view of the world when it comes to the spiritual side of mankind.

Dude, get checked for ADD, dementia or memory loss. It’s only been a few posts since I challenged you to pick a topic or post that I’ve made and debate it, discuss it or debunk it. You passed.

Now, it’s time to put up or shut up. Get some balls, do some homework or just move on. But quit playing dumb and quit twisting my words.

I actually posted this thread and the other one giving Richard Dawkins and Hitchens the opportunity to make the best points atheists have. And atheists are mad about it? lol

I actually know what the strongest argument atheism has, but atheists always want to spend the time complaining about me or about virgin births and walking on water

Petty resentments and imaginary grievances. But ultimately it probably boils down to a medical affliction.

You would be surprised how often @Dutch Uncle disagrees with me, but it's always done civilly and amicably. He thinks I'm out to lunch on objective morality and cosmic fine tuning and I think he is out in left field with the multiverse.

People don't notice disagreements if they are amicable. We are used to posts that are pregnant with insult and disparagement.

But unlike Perry PhD he doesn't use my threads as a platform to complain about me.

Explain why atheists, along with fundamentalist Christians are the two groups of people who demand the Bible be read strictly literally.

Explain why atheists are so keen to tell Christians how to practice Christianity.

No, you don't apply the same standards to everyone. You have a hyper-skeptical set of standards you only apply to Christian authors but to no one else.

You have never once in your life demanded historians stop using Herodotus and the Norse Sagas because they are a mix of myth, hyperbole, and historical data. You have complained that the gospels were written decades after the crucifixion but have never raised the slightest objection to the fact our oldest surviving accounts of Alexander the Great was written four centuries after his death.

We know the Norse, Greek, Roman gods are myths. So, why do you think the Christian ones are not?
The difference is that the intellectual foundation of Christianity and Buddhism is based on a historical claim about a real historical person.

The only question is whether you want to believe the witnesses, and the people who interviewed the witnesses fabricated everything or simply misunderstood what they experienced
Where’s the evidence?
The evidence are the independent accounts written by first century Jews (Paul, Mark, Matthew) and first century gentiles (Luke, Polycarp, Clement) - aka, people who were either witnesses, or who knew the witnesses.

Dude, you two have got to stop your bizarre misinterpretation of my posts, of the word twisting. I don’t have the time to continually correct you only to be misrepresented again.

What word twisting.? Are you are denying you have hyper-skeptical standards that you only apply to Christian authors, but not to Herodotus, Norse Sagas, Plutarch?

It's really funny that you make the case the Gospel authors were just copying from each other, but then in other posts you complain that the gospels authors contradict each other.

You can't have it both ways.

The militant atheists appear to be very unhappy people. People who only want to argue are often in some form of pain; mental or physical. Weird!
