Tunnel rats were volunteers. No official designation or extra incentive pay existed specifically for "tunnel rat" duties. It was considered part of regular infantry/engineer combat operations.
- Base Pay: Determined by rank and years of service (e.g., an E-1 private earned ~$78/month in 1965, rising to ~$138 by 1972).
- Hazardous Duty Pay: Existed for specific qualifying duties, such as:
- Parachute duty ("jump pay"): +$55/month (E-1 to E-3) or +$110/month (E-4+).
- Demolition duty: +$55–$110/month.
- Flight pay, diving pay, etc.
- Hostile Fire/Imminent Danger Pay: +$65/month (later increased) for any soldier in a combat zone exposed to hostile fire—this applied to nearly all troops in Vietnam, not just tunnel rats.
