Tunnel rats were volunteers. No official designation or extra incentive pay existed specifically for "tunnel rat" duties. It was considered part of regular infantry/engineer combat operations.

• Base Pay: Determined by rank and years of service (e.g., an E-1 private earned ~$78/month in 1965, rising to ~$138 by 1972).
• Hazardous Duty Pay: Existed for specific qualifying duties, such as:
  • Parachute duty ("jump pay"): +$55/month (E-1 to E-3) or +$110/month (E-4+).
  • Demolition duty: +$55–$110/month.
  • Flight pay, diving pay, etc.
  • Hostile Fire/Imminent Danger Pay: +$65/month (later increased) for any soldier in a combat zone exposed to hostile fire—this applied to nearly all troops in Vietnam, not just tunnel rats.

Doesn't change the fact they should have been paid extra, compared to the 90% of military personnel that never see combat. $65/month was chump change.

My DIL comes from Saigon and one time we went down the Cu Chi Tunnels, they'd been widened to accommodate tourists but they were still claustrophobic and humid. I did think about the guys that went down there to engage the Vietcong.
