Physical materialism

^^ Still no explanation at the fundamental level of chemistry and physics, despite having claimed the mantle of arrogant certainty dozens of posts ago.

I could rattle of a list of Nobel physicists who are religious, but that would encourage you to keep avoiding answering the question I asked.
Really though. Did you know that love is just a second hand emotion?

Anger and angst are the operative words.

This thread demonstrates the theory I had that there are very few genuine atheists who are atheist to the bone.

Domer can't live out his atheism to its logical conclusion. Despite having carried the flag of physical materialism in this thread, he is extremely reticent to admit his wife's love is nothing more than a chemical reaction between electrons, and there is nothing deeper and more profound about her love than just chemical reactions.
Ya gotta have faith, dude.

We all have faith about many things.

You have faith the pharmacist won't fuck up your meds. You don't perform a chemical analysis yourself to double check him.

The trap to avoid is blind faith. Faith and belief should be based on evidence or reason.
Well said and agreed. Something the emotionally overwrought often to not recognize. Sad.

The vicar at the Episcopalian church down the street here is a lesbian with a female spouse.
It's the Fundies, Young Earthers and other ultra-conservative religious sects who refuse to recognized facts and move forward.

Notice all the MAGAts whining about gays, trans and believe women are here to serve man based upon their interpretations of the Bible all while gnawing on a BBQ pulled-pork sammich and complaining about their two ex's asking for money to feed the kids.

I think that's right. Most angry atheists are just reacting emotionally to religion, rather than actually logically thinking out what a life and belief system based on strict physical materialism would actually entail.
You've noticed in the past that all the militant atheists specifically target Christianity and rarely, if ever, Judaism, Islam or Buddhism. Again, this seems to indicate past trauma with Christians, usually their parents.

Agreed this emotional blindness limits them from seeing the consequences of their own beliefs.

The fundy fire-and-brimstone churches are very annoying.

LOL.

There is a chance I'd be traumatized too if my parents dragged me to a fundamentalist church.

Back during the Islamophobia craze, lefties would bend over backyards to defend Islam, and studiously avoid saying anything bad about the religion. That was understandable to a degree, because Islamophobia manifested as a civil rights issue.

LOL Frankly, I'd find it as annoying as being forced to watch a televangelist. The trauma would come from being ostracized from the family home for not adhering to Fundie beliefs.

While it's probably happened, I've never heard of a 16 or 17 year old being tossed out of the family home for being an atheist. OTOH, there have been numerous instances of kids being tossed out for being gay, lesbian or trans.

I see no difference between bigotry against Muslims and bigotry against Christianity, Judaism or any other religious beliefs. There is a difference when it comes to physically attacking people on the street for wearing religious clothing or jewelry. That does, indeed, become both a criminal and a civil rights issue.

How often or how widespread do you think that ostracization happen? I have no idea myself

I don't think anyone's been killed for being atheist in western countries in the last 500 years. I think other types of discrimination happened until the 19th or 20th century.

Being gay was always more of a target.

Agreed. I remember having to talk some kids out of beating up a Muslim classmate the day after 9/11.

FWIW, Christians who hate gays are not following Christ.

OTOH, I can see how fundies, like your parents, think it's a sin and do not allow it in their home.
If you start today, perhaps you could be the next Myron Floren.

^^^
Another indication of emotional trauma is repeating themselves when dodging questions.

Sad that, in 2025, a 40something gay man can't face the trauma of their parents being old-fashioned resulting in that trauma festering as blind hate.

Are you trying to become the domer, Mr. Whipple?

Oh, and BTW, Einstooge, I’m 71 and been married 49 years. That’s not just a testament to my heterosexuality, it’s proof of how really shitty you are at your assessment skills.

There’s still the accordion as an option, Clyde. Take it. There must be SOMETHING you’re good at.

A good question for a study.

My first question is "How many gays, lesbians, bisexuals and other non-straights are there?" Current information is about 10%.

The next question is "How many fundamentalist anti-gay religious sects are there in the US?" This is a more difficult question to answer. The SPLC tracks anti-LGBTQ groups but the data indicates they are sparse albeit LOUD and PROUD with their money to push bigotry: https://www.splcenter.org/resources/extremist-files/anti-lgbtq/

Current polling indicates most people are accepting of LGBTQ people but, as with most bigotry, any number is "too many". It appears the bigots are primarily Republicans with, no doubt, a large portion of religious fundamentalists AKA American ISIS.
Gallup’s May 1-18 Values and Beliefs poll also finds that 64% of Americans consider gay or lesbian relations to be morally acceptable. This is the third identical reading in as many years and is down from the high point in the trend, 71%, in 2022. Majorities of Americans have considered same-sex relations to be morally acceptable since 2010.

A third question would be "What percentage of families have kicked out a family member due to LGBTQ issues?" This isn't crystal clear, but the number appears to be 14%.

Overall, 28% or 558,320 LGBTQ youth in the US reported experiencing homelessness or housing instability at some point in their lives...

...According to The Trevor Project, 14% of LGBTQ+ youth were kicked out or abandoned. 40% of those instances were due to sexual orientation or gender identity. 16% of LGBTQ+ youth ran away. 55% of those instances were due to mistreatment or fear of mistreatment due to sexual orientation or gender identity.

A fourth question would be "What is the mental health impact upon LGBTQ due to conflicts with their families?"
The previous links give a hint that it's a negative impact with 28% of LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness or "housing instability" at some point in their lives. Additionally, LGBTQ youth have higher levels of suicide, depression, substance abuse along with higher instances of abuse, harassment and murders.

Family rejection remains all-too common for LGBTQ individuals and may negatively affect their both mental and physical health. For example, family rejection of an LGBTQ person may lead to homelessness, which makes it difficult to stay in school or hold a job. Family rejection can also lead to long-lasting psychiatric problems later in life. Rejected individuals may develop depression and low self-esteem and may turn to alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs, smoking cigarettes to cope. People who experience familial rejection are more likely to be depressed, use illegal drugs, and attempt suicide than non-rejected young adults.

That's quite a confession since you are an ardent hater of all things Christian, domer76.

I'm truly sorry your family hates you for being "different" but also that you never grew the spine it takes to live your own life without hate.

The cure for an obsession, Mr. Whipple, is to get another one. That’s why I’m suggesting the accordion. The world needs more Myron Florens.
