Don't Look Here - Look Over There

At the last election (2008) we had D Poll Watchers who, for the first time since I've been working the polls I had never had a challenge before 2008 in a good 18 years worth of being an Election Judge, would challenge about 40% of the voters who were lined up, every one of them who were challenged were Rs who supposedly had "moved". I had to have them fill out a challenge sheet before they voted, some of them got frustrated and left, spoiling their ballot.

Now a personal story against DECADES of cheating by the republicans that keep them tied to a consent decree that the courts refuse to remove because of constant infractions by the republican party.

Damo the republican party has worked for decades to keep poor people from voting and the Courts document it.

The idea that white voters are being disenfrachised is laughable and I know you know that. Perform for the monkeys, but don't think you're fooling me Damo.

And I really think it's beyond sad that in the year 2010 racism is still so vile (as evidenced by the racists threats which you can find at the link), and that suppression of the minority vote is being attempted on such a wide scale.

And when you cover for racists, what are you?
Cover? I told a story related to another, that isn't "covering". If any poll watchers (R or D) tried to follow people to the booth, they'd be told that they need to follow the rules I gave them when they took the Poll Watcher Oath (yeah we have to actually make them take an oath here in CO) and step back or leave.

Anybody can challenge a vote, and they took advantage of it, they didn't however follow anybody anywhere.

I'm sure all Damo is doing is trying to "stimulate the debate."

Job well done, Damo. Keep up the good work.

I know. He is sooo transparent. He used to drive me crazy, but then I got so used to his methods that now I just laugh.

Gosh I hope he doesn't pull out the "Devil's Advocate" tactic on me next.

Again, a story from me isn't a defense of poll watchers who would violate the privacy of a voter.

Dear idiot, are you going to pretend the BP have a consent decree against them for CHEATING in elections for the last 30 years?

The republican party has worked to CHEAT poor voters out of their vote for decades now and the court has caught them repetedly.

Well!!!!

I'm not a republican, but I do know that the democrats have been very guilty of what you speak of.

I guess you're not aware of this fact.

Thanks. Although I know you are being facetious, it isn't unrealistic to expect even you and Darla to look at what I said rather than project what you expect onto my posts. I do often say things that I think would be taken as borderline to get people talking on slow days, but this isn't one of them.

LOL Damo you didn't have tears in your eyes when you wrote this did you?

A few questions:

(1) How did the poll watchers know the voters were Republicans?

(2) Why didn't you just give the challenged voters provisional ballots and determine their eligibility to vote at your polling location at a later time?

(3) While I find it hard to believe, I have no reason to doubt your story but it is by no means representative of anything other than your personal experience and it by no means discounts the very real history of minority vote suppression.

1. Small town, dude.
2. Because if they fill out the challenge sheet, they don't have to vote provisionally. A challenge sheet basically states, "This is my address, I am supposed to vote here, I am registered here." The office of the Secretary of State is then obligated to check if there was reason to suspect fraud. They then vote the regular ballot and put it into the regular count.
3. It was real, and there is no point that I have ever suggested that the anecdotal story I provided discounts any history of any sort. Please link to any suggestion of mine that my story made any other story invalid.

Small town? Really?

I live in a small town, and I was born in a small town, and I can breathe in a small town...but that doesn't change the fact that 90% of people are pretty private about how they vote.

Right, but you said they left and spoiled their ballots. That makes no sense. At worst, they could have cast provisional ballots if they didn't want to answer the questions.

And how long does it take to answer five questions and take an oath? Can't take more than a minute or two.

In our county, politics are not hard to determine. 70% of the people are registered republican, almost everybody is active. It is very easy to determine who isn't part of your political party.

I said that some of them didn't want the hassle and left, spoiling their ballots.

If they do not fill out the form, the ballot we assigned to them before the challenge is spoiled. Angry people short on time who stood in line often do things I never would. I would have filled it out and voted.

That was a really perceptive question by Nigel.

I live in a gated condo complex. Can you get smaller than that? We all vote here, right at the office. Pretty small polling place.

No one knows how I vote and I have no clue how they vote.

Yeah, I don't buy that.

Great catch Nigel.
