Wow...

are you serious? so no other npr reporter has ever given their opinion? they have all remained totally and completely objective?

I don't recall any other that called Michele Obama "Stokely Carmichael in a dress" that managed to keep their job.

Juan Williams has been a FOXNews contributor for several years now and Mara Liasson is still a FOXNews contributor and NPR news analyst.

He's a reporter. He's supposed to maintain objectivity. He hasn't done that.
Bullshit, you are justifying your agreement with NPR by not seeing the forest for the trees. Both Williams and Jacksons statements came from a fear that they feel inside. Not all fears are completely rational. But they are also not completely bigoted. Williams statement was prefaced by him commenting on the what could be percieved bigoted nature of his comment. Jesse prefaced his statement by saying he felt some shame in his feelings. But BOTH come from the same place.

And, as I've said, if Jackson were an NPR news analyst he appropriately would have been fired just like Williams.

Jesse experienced little if any fallout for this statement. He was not ostrasized by the left for it and I imagine lots of other people outright agreed with him. I don't care that NPR fired him, that is not my beef here. My beef is, the left completely supports this decision and gave Jesse little if any flack about his comment. Honestly, I don't think he deserved any, but the hipocracy on the left sometimes is as stunning as it is on the right, and the left tries so much harder than the right to portray themselves as more understanding and tollerant of opinions. I am not talking about blatantly racist statements, because neither Williams or Jacksons statements were blatantly racist. They were from the same place as people that have irrational fears of dogs, flying on airplanes or spiders. It's just that we don't allow people to give voice to this sort of thing because we have embraced a PC attitude that silences discussion on issues that are "out of bounds". Not cool to say you are afraid of black men or Muslims, but much more acceptable to say you are afraid of men in general. I think that we should embrace these kind of discussions because then both sides can talk about it and MOST people will come to some healthy middle ground about their own fears.

Wow! Just put so perfectly!

its always about skin color if its against liberal ideals.......

I just want to repeat that for anyone who might just be joining the board:

"It's always about skin color if it's against liberal ideals."

Now, for anyone who just needs that extra dose of stupidity this morning:

"It's ALWAYS about skin color if it's against liberal ideals."

Well done.

actually, I thought it was a point well made.....at the very least I would have expected Sharpton to file a protest and threaten boycott......

I thought the action was somewhat extreme, but what would your reaction be to a statement like this:

"I'm not prejudiced in any way, but being in close proximity to black people makes me really uncomfortable."

If that was all I had to go on... I would think the person, while being honest about how the situation made him feel, would be slightly prejudicial.

That said, it is not the case here. Juan Williams was speaking about HIS weakness. He stated in that conversation that we can't hold all Muslims responsible for the actions of the extremists, he stated many times that we too often do end up stereotyping as a result of events like 9/11 etc....

For them to pretend he was being bigoted is just the overly PC response that we find all too common today, especially from the left. I think there is this overwhelming need for many on the left to be 'sensitive' to the 'feelings' of Muslims and they are being insanely overprotective in this case. I also think there are Muslim groups who take advantage of it.

If we cannot criticize with out being labeled bigots, if we can't be honest about our feeling without being labeled bigots.... then what the fuck is the point?

Its sad that we are unable to voice our own thoughts and fears. I didn't see that the guy said anything bad about anyone. He was saying how HE felt. I never thought much of him, but firing him for this makes open and honest discourse even more difficult.

agreed

Well, Juan Williams is not an opinion columnist. Society can talk about these issues freely. Juan Williams can talk about this stuff freely. But he can't do it appearing on an opinion program while wearing the NPR news analyst hat. And NPR doesn't have to put up with it.

What a crock of shit.... he was ON O'REILLY.... AN OP-ED SHOW.....

It is astounding how far you will go to protect any liberal fuck up.

I think we can be honest about our feelings, and truly, I am someone who thinks "pc" has run amok.

I do think this is beyond "pc", though. I think it really marginalizes the opinion to just say criticism of it is "pc."

To me, saying Muslims make you uncomfortable on a plane is no different from saying Jews make you uncomfortable because you don't trust them, or blacks make you uncomfortable because they might rob you.

Sure, people can honestly express these feelings, but to me, it's being too "pc" not to call them for what they are.

What bugs me about this is that the left did NOT have this reaction to Jesse Jackson saying he felt relieved when he was walking down the street and heard someone behind him and it was not a black male. Somehow it was ok for Jesse to say this, but not ok for Juan to give voice to very much the same attitude. Jesse was not given the same "look down your nose" attitude that much of the left has been showing toward Juan Williams.

That is because Juan works with the EVILZ Fox

You cannot equate "Muslims make you uncomfortable on a plane" with "Jews make you uncomfortable because you don't trust them". The prejudice against jews is not based on anything they have done. Except for Israel they have never been in charge of anything and they have never run around terrorizing MOST of the people that are anti-semetic. The mistrust of Moslems on planes is rooted in actual events as is Jacksons mistrust of his fellow black men. If you read the NY Times article I linked to, it goes into the black on black crimes which is far more common than black on white crimes. Saying you mistrust Jews because they are involved in some Noahide conspiracy is based on purely fictionalized views of the jewish race, like the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, one of AssHats favorite bedtime reading materials. Fear of Muslims and Black men is rooted, at least in part, by actual events. The generalization of that fear is irrational, but not always bigoted in the same way that the Klan's hatered of blacks, jews and catholics is.

Wow - you sound just like O'Reilly.

So, the prejudice against Jews isn't based on anything "they" have done, but prejudice against Muslims IS based on something "they" have done?

Don't you hear how that sounds? This is where just about everyone is losing me on this topic, and I realize I'm in the minority. The bottom line is this: all it takes is a small group of extremists to impugn an entire group, no matter how big that group is.

I don't see Christians as being potentially violent because of the KKK...do you?

I agree that it's not bigoted in the same way as a hate group's ideals, but you can't argue that it's not prejudiced. It would be impossible to do so.

What is your point with this chart? That the percent from Universities (the public ones) should be reduced to ZERO? That the money from the CPB should be reduced to ZERO? That the 5.8% from federal state and local should be reduced to ZERO?

I don't really give a shit. I think Juan Williams is an idiot and should have been fired for being an idiot. I also think NPR was well within its rights for firing him.
