Visa blocks payments to WikiLeaks.

The wikileaks dude said he would destroy our economy if they ever tried to prosecute him for anything. Methinks the dude is a bit of a nutter.

Well from just what I have seen in the seaches I've done, twitter is blowing up all over the place and Visa and Mastercard websites are going down, if not already down!

Has he actually said that?

I know he's insinuated things will happen if anything happens to him but has he threatened to destroy the US economy?

I have "heard" this, but not actually seen it written anywhere. I heard he has a Doomsday file prepared to be delivered once anything adverse happens to him and that several people have access to this file(s).

The bit about the file seems real enough. You can still download it on various P2P networks and it is a precaution which seems eminently sensible if you're going to annoy lots of powerful people.

What i haven't seen is any threat from Assange to "destroy the US economy". If anyone has a quote i'd be grateful.

"As part of its technological countermeasures undertaken since Friday, WikiLeaks has turned to servers operated by the Swedish Pirate Party, which previously signaled support for the document-sharing effort in August. And the number of mirror sites continues to grow at the pace of one every few minutes, topping 1,000 this afternoon.

The countermeasures are designed to keep WikiLeaks' constellation of Web sites--including Wikikeaks.is, Wikileaks.fr, Wikileaks.de, Wikileaks.nl, and Wikileaks.no--online in case of a denial-of-service attack or other, less direct, pressure."

I am going to be searching in a little bit. If I find anything, I will post it.

This whole thing is like the makings of a movie...

For the sake of freedom and all that's good in the world and to stop the secretive elite

CANCEL YOUR VISA ACCOUNTS NOW
and tell them why.

Visa Europe has begun suspending payments to whistle-blowing website Wikileaks ahead of carrying out an investigation into the organisation.

It follows a similar move by rival payments processor Mastercard on Tuesday.

Visa's announcement comes after Wikileaks' founder Julian Assange was arrested by police in London.

Mr Assange, whose website has published secret documents, is wanted in Sweden on sexual assault allegations.

Wikileaks relies on online donations to fund its operations, which will now not be possible using both Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards.

Not to endorse Visa but I do have a tale to tell.

About a year ago I made a purchase through Pay Pal. The item was promised within a week to ten days. Being a man of patience I waited almost three weeks and wrote the company. Then, I waited, again.

I didn't receive a reply from the company so I wrote Pay Pal and gave them the details and asked for a refund as I understood Pay Pal's guarantee was to reimburse if it was determined a product was not received. And again, I waited.

A week or so later Pay Pal wrote back saying they tried to contact the company but didn't receive a reply so the judgment was in my favor I did not receive my goods and I would be hearing from them shortly.

Great!! :) Or so I thought. :(

True to word Pay Pal contacted me and reaffirmed they decided I did not receive my goods, however, they were not able to reimburse me as they were not able to retrieve the money from the company.

I immediately wrote back with a "HUH??? I'm not sure I understand. What is the purpose of your guarantee?"

You'll notice their site states, "Your order never arrives.
All you have to do is log in to your account and open a dispute to get the refund process started. https://cms.paypal.com/ca/cgi-bin/?cmd=_render-content&content_ID=security/safe_online_shopping

Well, the reason they wouldn't issue a refund is they have to get the money from the company involved. If the company has money in their Pay Pal account then Pay Pal simply reverses the transaction. However, if the company is run by any self-respecting thief they would make sure they transferred the funds out of Pay Pal and into a bank account. So much for Pay Pal's implied guarantee regarding reimbursement. You'll only get your money back if the thief hasn't already taken it.

Well, needless to say, Apple wasn't a happy camper. No goods. No money. Very bad mood. (Yes, I know this is long but I like to tell the whole story.)

So, I contacted Visa and told them the story.

"Contact us in three day, Mr. Apple", the lady instructed.

Three days later I checked my Visa balance on the computer and there was my refund. Once, again, Apple was a happy camper.:D

(Almost finished.) A couple of days after receiving my refund Pay Pal emailed me writing, "Visa contacted us regarding your account." :cof1: Short. Sweet and to the point. They never mentioned the refund. They never mentioned why Visa contacted them. Nothing.

So, the way I see it is if Pay Pal only issues a refund if they can reverse the transaction with an offending company Visa simply reverses the transaction with Pay Pal leaving Pay Pal holding the proverbial bag.

Just thought I'd pass this on as a public service. After all, Pay Pal advertises itself as a secure, safe way to pay.

Finally, I still use Pay Pal and no hard feelings on my part. :)

I see stuff out in the blogosphere and one article talking about a lively discussion on Shep Smith's show, but nothing other than a couple of major banks.

Here's one from November 30th: http://www.theburningplatform.com/?p=7873

I was wondering if bringing down their sites could also paralyze their computer systems that handle credit card purchases? It could very well cripple sales purchases and naturally they will be heavier this time of year.

He is a truly odd cove and no mistake. I forgot to mention all the bestiality and sadism websites out there that use credit cards.

I don't believe you. Please provide links to the beastiality and sadism websites(just so I can check it out for myself, ya know? No other reason. Really).

what did the fool expect when he poked the grumpy bear with a sharp stick

a bouquet of roses - of course the establishment is cutting him off at the pockets and without money, he will find it very hard to get high speed access to the internet - but what about low speed and mirror sites

can the establishment cut off the information fast enough not to get it posted and spread?

you should upgrade from a TRS-80 model 1

Weren't the 90s an amazing decade for computer technology? On the Mac front, we evolved from the Apple 88 to the iMac, and on the PC front we got Windows 98. We got the HTTP in 1991, and a whole crapload of gizmos to boot. Surprisingly, we did very little with television screens, since the emphasis was on largeness and home theatre systems...

i started in professional computing back in 63 and worked on a machine that had vacuum tubes and was bigger than two or more houses (AN/FSQ-Y7)
the bad old days of computing when all we had were card decks without edit capability - but, if you were lucky, you could get away with coding in machine code using the main console

Hey, Apple, you should upgrade yourself to PC!!!

LOL! Actually, I've always had a PC. When I purchased my first computer I was in a hurry to get on a chat site as I was at home recovering from an accident. The site asked for a name so I looked around the room and saw a picture of the apple trees where I grew up so... apple it was.

Those were the days. The group of chatters would meet every so often. PA. NY. Ontario, Canada. Spend a couple of days at a hotel. Have a few beers.

Wouldn't it be great if this group met for a few beers? :ouch:
