'I am very grateful we have a new president' | DC mayor plans for statehood under Biden administration

Asked if she believes the new administration will quickly progress D.C. to become the 51st state, an effort Washington DC mayor Muriel Bowser has long championed, she seemed hopeful.

"We have Democratic control of the House of Representatives, the Senate and now the White House, and the leadership in all of those bodies have expressed support for D.C. Statehood," she said, adding that Joe Biden is a "longtime" supporter of the District becoming a state.

Nobody gives a fuck. FUCK BIDEN....NOT OUR PRESIDENT. You can give the D's a thousand senators and it STILL wont matter. You cannot govern the ungovernable. We concede nothing,....we give nothing. Build what you want but it will be without us . Good luck trying to walk on one leg....

SCOTUS would not allow a federal district to be a state as well. it's one or the other.
Who knows? maybe even Roberts would take it up being as it's abut CREATING A STATE

It does not require a constitutional amendment.

All the constitution requires is a federal district not to exceed 10 square miles, but no minimum size is specified either. Legally it could be one Square mile

Statehood would modify and shrink the federal district to just the white house, Capitol building, mall, and associated buildings. The rest of DC would become the state of Columbia.

Perfectly legal.

There is no overriding reason Georgetown, Foggy Bottom, Adams Morgan, Anacostia, etc. have to be part of a federal district.

That might do it, I have never heard that idea -but cant be rejected

These are DC bedroom communities. their identity is as such and they are economically and culturally tied
to the District however, their natural orientation

I remember when conservatives defiantly insisted they would never, under any circumstances, accept gay marriage, legal pot, Obamacare, etc.

District of Columbia. If residents want representation, then give DC back to the states the land was taken from. No need to make it the smallest state with TWO Senators. It'd be making a city a state. Just give it back to Maryland.

SCOTUS has no constitutional authority in admitting a State. Constitutionally that power belongs to Congress and congress only. Having said that the actual process for admitting a State is all over the place. However given that the majority of the populations of both DC and Puerto Rico have clearly favored Statehood it is probably inevitable that they will become US States as no US Territory, District or possession of the US that has applied for Statehood has failed to receive it. Though it could take a very long time. It took Alaska 90 years and Oklahoma over 100 years.

DC was not “taken” from Maryland. That would have been blatantly Unconstitutional. The State with the agreement of the people agreed to permit that territory to be split into the District which is Constitutional.

Now returning to the State of Maryland is a perfectly legal option but it has to be supported by a majority of the population of the District and The State of Maryland and the Districts population has made it very clear that a majority of the population prefers independent Statehood.

So returning to the State of Maryland would appear to be off the board.

Much the same happened in Crimea. The Crimeans voted to rejoin Russia.

People first.

If you are talking about population, it would not be the smallest state with two senators. Wyoming and Vermont are both smaller.

If you are talking about land size, why are you talking about land size? Are you suggesting that representation should be allocated by land size?

DC only exists because it was thought important to remove the federal government from the control of any state.........there really seems to be only two possible solutions........either return DC to the states it was carved out of or let it be a state and move the federal government somewhere else........maybe we could carve out a bit of Kansas and Missouri with the river running through it........we could name it DFO........the District of Fly Over.......

I dont know why we are even talking about it at all. Talking about something brings legitimacy to it. THAT is not needed here. I mean,...its not like we dont ALL KNOW what changing the designation in DC is REALLY all about,...right? I just hate this kind of dishonesty. Now,... if we want to talk about giving the D's permanent control over the senate which is what this is REALLY all about then we can talk,....I just dont get why everyone has to play along with the ruse and PRETEND its about something other than what it is when we all know better. There has been more than enuff Seedy dishonesty in here .....
