If a poster was constantly lying about you because they have mental issues, there are a few options: Ignore them all the time, ignore them some of the time/respond some of the time, respond all the time. Any response to off-topic discussion would be seen as "abandoning a discussion to talk about a poster".

Generally speaking most people don't want to discuss the topic they want everyone to think they're right. That's been my experience with internet forums. So once they abandoned the topic to talk about me I want to see how long I can distract them.

If somebody else changes the topic that isn't me abandoning the topic.

It was shortly after that when he began accusing me of being the person attacking him even though he never went into detail about who that person was.

No; anyone can change their username. That's not the same as a sock account. A sock is a second account (or more). It's not uncommon that people change usernames like others change avatars or signatures. Go to a person's profile and click on "Username History". If there isn't a folder for it then they've never changed their name.
