51st state - Washington DC

I'm against making it a 51st State. It's a fucked idea. If they want Senators and Reps, let them use Maryland's.

The Democrats want to turn it into TWO more Democrat Senators. What they don't realize is that, once a state, the dynamics change. The State would become Republican through gentrification and lobbyists. All the poorer residents will be forced out. Still, it's a stupid idea to make such a small area a state.

I'd rather divide California into Democrat and Republican halves.

I agree with you on lots of things, Unk. But on this item...you are dead wrong.

Land should not have the power of the vote. People should have the power of the vote.

My suggestion is the John Galt plan. Sit back and allow this all to happen with one party in complete and total control with no way to blame the other party. It ends with people needing some REALLY GOOD running shoes. Or... it ends up with things turning out well and I benefit from it. " that wont happen" .... Either way I win. I come along for the ride and benefit just as much as you do........OR... we are rid ourselves of you fucks forever. Either way....
I would not recommend basing your life on the mediocre novel Atlas Shrugged

The Australian federal capital district of Canberra, and Brazil's federal district of Brasilia both receive full representation in their parliament and Congress, respectively

I believe the United States might be the only western democracy on the planet which does not give representation to citizens living in the nation's capital district.

On California or DC?

The only reason the Democrats want to make DC a state is to add two more Democratic Senators to the Senate. Sure, it'll work out that way initially, but because of that power involved, that would incentivize those with money to start moving into DC until it's a concentrated state of Big Money Republicans with huge mansions and no ghettoes.

Democrats are famous for building roads to Hell with good intentions. Consider the social dynamics involved in what you suggest.

Actually it's not so easy peasy cuz that would short the Democrats to senators

Thanks for confirming that this isn't about "taxation without representation" but, like the Democrat plan to stack the Court, it's an attempt to stack the Senate with two more Democratic Party Senators.

My guess is that wouldn't last more than 2-3 elections before it'd flip to Republicans. Money talks, bullshit walks and it's not the first time Democrats fell into a trap.

You are on the wrong side, Stone.

Too bad you and your kind cannot see it.

Like I said. Either way .... we win. We come along for the ride and profit as much as anyone else if your way works, ...or....if the whole thing totally crashes and burns with D's in complete and total control then we are rid of you because you will literally not be able to push the blame off on anyone but yourself and your chosen leaders.

So then EXACTLY like I said a few posts back....

No taxation without representation

'I am very grateful we have a new president' | DC mayor plans for statehood under Biden administration

Asked if she believes the new administration will quickly progress D.C. to become the 51st state, an effort Washington DC mayor Muriel Bowser has long championed, she seemed hopeful.

"We have Democratic control of the House of Representatives, the Senate and now the White House, and the leadership in all of those bodies have expressed support for D.C. Statehood," she said, adding that Joe Biden is a "longtime" supporter of the District becoming a state.

Throw in Puerto Rico too, and the Democrats are looking at potentially 4 new Senators.

So?

Elections have consequences, don't they?

What makes you think Washington DC, where 45% of the population is black, would flip to Republicans at any time or point?

Money talks, bullshit walks and it's not the first time Democrats fell into a trap.

So what was one of those times?

It does not require a constitutional amendment.

All the constitution requires is a federal district not to exceed 10 square miles, but no minimum size is specified either. Legally it could be one Square mile

Statehood would modify and shrink the federal district to just the white house, Capitol building, mall, and associated buildings. The rest of DC would become the state of Columbia.

Perfectly legal.

There is no overriding reason Georgetown, Foggy Bottom, Adams Morgan, Anacostia, etc. have to be part of a federal district.

that makes no sense, if you did that, the states these parts of the city are in should go to that state.

this is the ultimate in "gerrymandering"

I didnt confirm anything. Your drugs are making you delusional.....again

Agreed. Make them citizens of Maryland. Easy-Peasy.

Why? DC isn't Maryland. It's its own thing. So what are you talking about?

Also, per the Constitution, changing existing borders on states requires 2/3 support in Congress and the House, plus a majority of the vote of MD and DC.

It ain't happening that way.

Statehood only requires a majority vote in the Senate and House if you're not changing the borders of existing states, and the DC Statehood bill has already passed the House.

I bet that the Democrats include DC and PR statehood in a new Voting Rights Act.

They don’t want to be part of Maryland, make them a state, easy peasy

Why? Why make a city a state? Think of all the structures of government they'd have to tax and build? What is their industry? They'd quickly become the poorest state in the Union followed by becoming the richest state as Republicans and Corporate Lobbyists take over.

In 20 years, Washington DC would become the Whitest State in the Union. Whiter than North Dakota and a helluvva lot richer. :)

VA and MD ceded land for it's creation. just give it back.

gerrymandering sucks, there is no logical sense to take a tiny city, cut out a zone for a federal zone and make it a state.

it makes total sense

The State of Nevada has about 50% of it's territory administered by the federal government.

The District of Columbia could cede the Mall, Capitol Hill, the White House, and associated infrastructure to the federal government to operate as a federal district. There is no pressing reason that DC communities like Georgetown, Adams Morgan, and Anacostia need to be in a federal district.

It ultimately becomes a matter of fairness.

The Australian federal capital district of Canberra, and Brazil's federal district of Brasilia both receive full representation in their parliament and Congress, respectively

I believe the United States might be the only western democracy on the planet which does not give representation to citizens living in the nation's capital district.

You're someone who comes on anonymous boards, lies about himself, and then pretends like he doesn't care.

More people live in DC than Wyoming. So maybe we swap? Wyoming can be the district with no representation, and DC can be the state.

That sounds fair to me.
