"A Republic, if you can keep it."

Benjamin Franklin is often quoted as saying "A Republic if you can keep it" in response to a question following his exit from Independence Hall after the Constitutional Convention in 1787.

Although there is no proof positive, the response came from Mrs. Elizabeth Willing Powell's question, "Well, Doctor. What have we got? A Republic or monarchy?" Mrs Powell was the wife of Philadelphia Mayor Samuel Powel and both a prominent social figure, but also a friend of Franklin.

Flash forward over 230 years and the question remains the same "Well, Doctor, what have we got? A Republic or a monarchy?" The answer also remains the same: "A Republic if you can keep it."

Already JPP has seen a handful of Alt-Right members favor suspending the Constitution and imposing martial law across the land until further notice. That's not how a Republic does things. That's how a monarch does things.

Tenth Amendment, beotch.

In a few brief sentences, the high court said it would not consider the case for procedural reasons, because Texas lacked standing to bring it.

"Texas has not demonstrated a judicially cognizable interest in the manner in which another State conducts its elections," the court wrote in an unsigned ruling Friday evening.

Well, that doesn't surprise me that some of our posters are extremists. I've always said this forum is NOT a representative cross-section of the USA. Certainly the most motivated political junkies are here, but that doesn't describe most of America. The fact of the matter is that we at JPP are a very small microcosm of mostly the American voting public, although not all of us are Americans.

And it is only logical that some people who are not very well adjusted, and have difficulty having a normal life nor functional relationships with other humans, would be drawn to a virtual place where the only requirement is the ability to sign up for an anonymous online account. That would result in a higher percentage of troubled minds in a Forum like this. Such clouded minds would certainly be blinded to the danger of actually overriding elections in favor of their star political figure.

I thought this was going to be a thread about the SCOTUS rejecting the Texas lawsuit, basically ending Trump's long shot chance to stop the electoral college.

It appears that despite the fascist party's attempts to stack the U.S. Supreme Court and subvert this election -- that we're still a republic.

We true Americans will sleep well tonight.

<snip>

The evidence clearly suggests this extremism, this fascism is not a tiny subset of the Republican Party.

Having failed to demonstrate evidence of massive vote fraud to any judge, 20 Republican attorneys general and 120 Republican congressional representatives have resorted to begging the Supreme Court to thwart the will of the voters in five states.

That is exactly what communists and fascists would try to do.

Wow, you put that in bold!

That would not surprise you if you were a regular reader .

Reminder:

I was listening to Douglas Murray somewhere that escapes me at the moment being asked how it is he has come through, how he is OK in spite of all the abuse he takes, and he said something like "Except for the people I both know and respect I dont give a flying fuck what people think, I pursue truth to the best of my ability and quality people can help me with that as but for the opinion of random people I could not care less".

I have come around to that position given all of the very low quality fucks we have running around now.

Well, of course it's very troubling.

But they were unsuccessful. They were given a much bigger voice by Trump, and what we are hearing are the last audible gasps of that voice. There will be a new voice now. A mature voice.

Trump can be relegated to being a truly bizarre sideshow. It will be like the birther crowd. It's really all the same people. Many of them weren't even voters anyway. They will be lucky if their cult leader can keep his tush out of serious legal trouble. They think fighting the legal election didn't go well, they should be prepared for what comes next. It may be the battle to keep him from doing prison time.

Having him face a court for even SOME of his alleged crimes would be justice well deserved for all of America.

The best thing that could happen for the country would be to put some closure to the Trump show. Put it in the rear view mirror as something the right wants to forget about even more than they want to pretend W never embarrassed them.

Correct, no forum/board is going to give us that I am afraid.

I don't think many are, if any.......... While they talk the talk, they aint walking the walk...

Real easy, as you pointed out, to say shit anonymously from your arm chair in front of the tv........

it is quite another to grab a weapon & walk outside thinking you may never come back....

It is, to an extent. Trump is trying every way to can to set himself up as Presidente de por vida and the American system, as currently established has worked on every front. That doesn't mean it can't be beefed up, but it's holding together.

This is why I become concerned about people seeking to rewrite the Constitution for short-term political gain be it to eliminate the Electoral College or to nullify votes in another state.

Agreed JPP, or any political forum, is not a valid cross section of US political views. OTOH, it is as good cross-section of the most prevalent extreme views. Usually those same views as seen on evening cable news shows.

Agreed on how some people will seek refuge in a virtual world, but that view doesn't cover all of us. I think it certainly covers the elderly or infirm who are living as shut-ins.
