A search and rescue operation is underway for a submarine touring the wreckage of the

I would be happy to find out that the sub floated to the surface and has been drifting with everyone inside alive and OK.

Not a lot of chance for that though, I guess.

The US coast guard has confirmed that a Canadian aircraft has detected underwater noises in the search area for the five men trapped on the lost Titan.

The search group are trying to now find where the noises are coming from.

In a Tweet it said: 'Canadian P-3 aircraft detected underwater noises in the search area. As a result, ROV operations were relocated in an attempt to explore the origin of the noises. Those ROV searches have yielded negative results but continue.

'Additionally, the data from the P-3 aircraft has been shared with our U.S. Navy experts for further analysis which will be considered in future search plans.'

Amazing if true!

A British rescue mission to locate a missing submarine has been "blocked by US officials" despite there being just hours until the five passengers onboard run out of oxygen.

A remotely operated vehicle capable of pulling the vessel - which takes tourists to the Titanic shipwreck - out of the Atlantic Ocean has been waiting to leave an airport in the Channel Islands since 7pm on Monday.

The team from deepwater specialists Magellan Limited has not received approval for take-off.

An urgent search off the coast of Newfoundland was launched after the submarine lost contact an hour and 45 minutes into its dive which began on Sunday morning.

A search and rescue operation is underway for a submarine touring the wreckage of the Titanic

I would not go on a tour like this even if it was free, let alone for $250,000 for this reason, might not make it back to the surface?!!

After 96 hours all on the sub will be dead, that's when the air supply runs out, if it did not implode?!! Even if they find the sub before the air runs out, how would you bring it back up to the surface at extreme depth?!!

The US Coast Guard launched a search and rescue operation Monday for a submarine that went missing during an expedition to the wreckage of the Titanic, CNN partner CTV News reported.

The group conducting the trip, Oceangate Expeditions, said it is “exploring and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely.”

“Our entire focus is on the crewmembers in the submersible and their families. We are deeply thankful for the extensive assistance we have received from several government agencies and deep sea companies in our efforts to reestablish contact with the submersible,” the group said. “We are working toward the safe return of the crewmembers.”

The submersible holds up to five people, the company says on its website. It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were on board.

CNN has reached out to the Boston-based Coast Guard and authorities in Newfoundland, Canada.

The Titanic infamously hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage and sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in April 1912, killing over 1,500 people. The wreckage of the Titanic, discovered in 1985, sits in two parts at the bottom of the ocean nearly 13,000 feet below the surface southeast of Newfoundland.

More recently, costly private tours have been offered to tourists, allowing people to see the wreck up close.
An archived version of OceanGate’s website, accessible via the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, lays out what passengers can expect on the $250,000 trip.

“Follow in Jacques Cousteau’s footsteps and become an underwater explorer — beginning with a dive to the wreck of the RMS Titanic. This is your chance to step outside of everyday life and discover something truly extraordinary,” the website said. “Become one of the few to see the Titanic with your own eyes.”

The eight-day expedition is based out of St. John’s, Newfoundland. The trip begins with a 400-nautical-mile journey to the wreck site

In many ways the money would have been spent anyway. Navy ships are patrolling the Atlantic. Does it matter if they are off the coast of Iceland or over the spot where the Titanic sunk? No, because the cost is the same.

I've seen politicians complain about the cost of other politicians traveling on military transports. The money would have been spent anyway because military flight crews are always training to maintain proficiency. The cost is the same if they are just boring holes in the skies as for flying from Point A to Point B.

Your point is well taken, but while I have no data, I suspect several millions of dollars extra are being spent on this. The company that was profiting from this should pay the government back.

...or the insurance company. There's a billionaire onboard the sub. Let him pay.

Could be worse, it might have been full of lawyers. In which case definitely let them drown.

Let me guess.....

They could have given it to those poor, deserving folks who looted the McDonald's in Los Angeles.

Reparations for being forced by society to loot and steal from businesses, maybe?

1% chance of survival. even IF they are found, they have to have a way to raise it back to the surface. if they've lost power, they are all going to be seriously hypothermic. finding them is going to be a nightmare alone..........

I don't see this turning out well

It may have been capitalism that killed these people.

There is reporting in the NY Times that the CEO of Oceangate bypassed industry standards of Independent inspection and testing in a rush to push this submersible into service to take rich tourists down to see the wreck. 250k per tourist.

This story reminds me of the ARA San Juan story.

I expect the everyone was dead by the time anyone knew that it was off radar.
