American Suicide Bombers

Hyperbole or reality? You decide. In this well-reasoned opinion piece, the author makes the argument that the morons (my word) protesting state protective measures are the moral equivalent of a suicide bomber.

"The Post reported Sunday far-right militias, led by three brothers, have used Facebook to organize “anti-quarantine protests” at state capitols around the country. Tens of thousands have joined their Facebook group, giving the impression that a “populist libertarianism” sentiment is emerging more than opinion surveys would suggest.
...

"This activity is being amplified by the president, who appeared last week on Twitter to encourage armed resistance to state-based initiatives aimed at containing the novel coronavirus pandemic with orders to stay home. The “protests” were in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan and others swing states Donald Trump needs to win reelection.

"Meanwhile, the Pew Center, which is the gold standard for measuring public opinion, released a new survey in which 66 percent of Americans fear their state governments will lift restrictions “too quickly.” Sixty-five percent said “Trump’s initial response” to the COVID-19 pandemic was “too slow.” Moreover, 73 percent said the worst is yet to come. (Implicit is the widespread doubt of Washington’s ability to face the challenge.)

...

"To be sure, “silent majority” is what fascists have said for decades when they need to contravene a rapidly changing view on, say, an overseas war going south. “Silent majority” is what a literal minority invokes to smash a literal majority in the face. Even so, Nixon’s words should resonate right now when 41,000 Americans are dead from COVID-19. “If a vocal minority, however fervent its cause, prevails over reason and the will of the majority, this nation has no future as a free society,” Nixon said. Individuals can’t be truly free. In the collective, however, can be found the meaning of freedom.

"In this sense, the protesters have it backwards. They believe (or pretend to believe; more on that in a moment) that government coercion is the opposite of individual freedom. Stay-at-home orders infringe their liberty. If they want to risk getting sick—or dying—that’s their right. No government has the authority to tell them otherwise.

"This thinking ignores the fact that one person’s right to liberty ends with another person’s right to security, and that all governments are charged with balancing all of those rights for everyone’s sake. (Whether a government is striking the right balance is usually reflected by the majority view.) For this reason, coercion is not the opposite of freedom during a pandemic. Coercion, at least for now, is in the service of freedom. Only when everyone is acting in everyone else’s interest can this crisis be overcome."

A better case could be made that it is closer to "morbid stupidity" than to "suicide bombing", OW.

I think the writer of that article jumped the shark, so to speak.

Considering protests don't work, I fail to see the connection.

The point of the article is that a small but very loud minority of idiots is putting us at risk of further spread of the disease. They do not represent the majority of Americans. Yet the IMPOTUS is cheering and egging them on -- but only in states with (D) governors of course.

They are out there prancing around without PPE, mingling freely, shaking hands, bellowing -- and infecting others. Then the self-pity rally is over, and off they go to spread their retardation -- and virus -- elsewhere.

There are three groups.
1. The protesters you refer to I wouldn't call them suicide bombers but rather idiots playing Russian roulette with those they come in contact with.
2. The sane people who listen and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
3. The nut jobs that will go so far as to where hazmat suites (exaggeration) when they go out.

If people will use a little common sense and listen to the experts we will all get through this.

Our problem is though that some ppl refuse to use common sense, and thus endanger us all. The more attention the media gives to the protesting idiots, for example, the more they'll continue to do it and pressure the govt. of their states to re-open things before we should. We've seen before the power of small but very loud groups to drive public policy.

Short of marshal law there isn't a damn thing we can do about it.

Hyperbole. Panicked hyperbole at that. Comparing them to terrorists implies he thinks they should be shot down in the streets like happened to terrorists at a Dallas art show a few years back.

LWers did it when President Trump was elected. Also when Wisconsin elected a Republican governor. I happened to be at Madison on business when that was happening. Fun stuff.

Still, protesting isn't terrorism. If a person knowingly infects another, that could be considered terrorism. If they accidentally do it because they believed their President that this is a fake virus, no worse than the flu and just following his orders to liberate their state, then that's not terrorism.

Just remember they were doing it because Trump told them to do it. :)

Democratic and Republican governors pushed back Sunday on President Donald Trump's tweets to "liberate" states where people protested social distancing measures enacted to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

"LIBERATE MINNESOTA!" the president exclaimed in one tweet. "LIBERATE MICHIGAN!" he cried in another. "LIBERATE VIRGINIA! and save your great 2nd Amendment. It is under siege!" he wrote in a third.

Even those fascist liberals balk at martial law. We would be better off if the president focused on the pandemic and not on promoting reckless behavior, wouldn't you agree?

I don't believe the president has that much influence on these nut jobs. They simply use him as an excuse.

This is a positive. We need Volunteers to start 'opening things up'. Let them 'open things up' ... and see what happens. If they start dying off or have some health problems, it's on them.
I don't see the Problem here, ... am I missing something?

These are nothing more than outdoor Trump Rallies.

If Donald Trump had a set of Balls, he would tell them to set tight, and he'll personally come to their towns and hold Trump Rallies, where they can clusterfuck, and he'll kiss all the babies, shake all their hands, and give as many hugs and high fives as he possibly can- JUST TO PROVE THAT THIS WAS ALL A DEMOCRAT HOAX AND THERE IS NO DANGER AND THAT HE ABOVE ALL- IS NOT SCARED OF SOME Fake LITTLE VIRUS!

And QUE SARA SARA!

WHATEVER SHALL BE- WILL BE!

The future is ours to see!

QUE SARA SARA!

I guess time will tell if there was a Typhoid Mary or Harry in the bunch. They will be tracking the infection rate and death in these areas. It’s too bad we don’t have identifies so we can trace the infection rate.

Jack, I think what the point is, can these right wing fanatics open things up and keep the covid-19 virus contained to themselves, or will they affect other people as well??????

I’d be happy with a fine, unless someone they come in contact with dies.

Which would be an interesting group court case because they'd say "We were in a time of war and just following the Commander in Chief's orders!"

Personally, I'm more worried about a popcorn and root beer shortage over the next six months+ until the Election. :)

Everyone will become infected, some will die, some will learn from their mistakes, some will not, life goes on.
