Anonymous Posting

I don't know if anyone who posts here keeps up with what's going on in the real world. You know, the rest of the internet. Anyway, there has been a big movement to discourage anonymous posting. Many sites have suffered for years with terrible comment sections fouled up with horrific racism, misogyny, threats, and various cruelties. Salon.com comes to mind for me. But it's all over the net. So now I have noticed that when I go to read an article at many sites, instead of not being able to make a comment because I never registered and won't bother to now, I am automatically signed in via facebook. At first I didn't like this. And I would never have thought I'd want to post non-anonymously.

But I like it. I like it a lot. I definitely see myself moving over to a 100% non-anonymous board(s). I don't think any message boards have done it yet. It's just news sites and blogs. Of course you can still create a fake fb account, or a fake twitter. This doesn't end abuse, but it greatly discourages it. There is a huge difference in the comment sections where everyone is posting with their fb accounts. So far no one has even called me a c*nt! Never once have I been called a man-hater. I post the same way I do here. First of all I think just having that picture of yourself right out there humanizes everyone to each other. And of course some of the behavior we have seen over the years, does anyone believe ID or Loyal would be spewing the things they spewed if their co-workers and neighbors could conceivably read it some day? (Their families probably know all too well) NO WAY.

I understand the argument for anonymity. You don't want your boss to see what your political opinions, blah blah blah. But I think that's very exaggerated and most people could post with their names. They just don't want to.

Especially with the election coming up I will definitely be moving more and more to sites that post with your FB. (You do not have to show your activity to your fb friends, so they are not buried under an onslaught of your Paul Ryan rantings). I would love to see a message board like JPP move to this format. Though I know JPP never will. But I think there's an opportunity there. People really are social animals and if you give them the opportunity to post as themselves, a lot of them will take it. It's more fun.

But I wonder what others here think, and if anyone here would ever do it.
The only thing left for Darla to do is report to the government for a microchip implant.

I love how delusional you are. This is like an 80yo in a wheelchair claiming he just kicked my ass in tennis.

Now don't go getting your panties in a bunch. Accept your defeats with grace. By the way, I met that 80 year old and I can see him kicking your ass in tennis.

I cannot wait to respond to this later today. Don't have the energy atm. This is one of my favorite topics, I talk about this all the time with people.

I post under my real name and always have, mind you it helps to have the Atlantic Ocean to protect against loonies.

The Atlantic may protect you against some lunatics, but the UK has their share. I spent a number of years on GameTalk. The political chat there was vastly different and more moderated, except for one forum. There was a young fellow there who seemed pretty cool. I didn't talk with him a lot, but he was in on enough of the discussions that I knew who he was. I was quite surprised when I found out he had taken a butchers knife and killed a nurse, after talking about killing someone on GT.

Yes.... let's make it law of the land that every time you voice your opinion, you must identify who you are, so that whenever you say something others disagree with, we can hunt you down and ruin your life! We can get you fired from your job, shunned by your neighbors, and maybe even harassed by the FBI? It's far more important that we do this as opposed to letting people speak freely and openly, without fear of reprisal. Why? Because this would allow us to condemn people easier, to destroy their lives with greater ease, because we just can't have all of these idiots running around saying what they think, that's not America!

RETARD!

RETARD!

Dixie where did I say anything about making it a law? It's a choice. You have that choice on the internet now at some sites.

You better have your helmet equipped with a splash guard if you are going to go spastic like this.

Yeah, but we know we can just find you at the BP headquarters bowing down to your beloved masters... it isn't that far a hop across the pond ;)

It's funny how when you yank a Yank's chain they almost always makes the same flushing sound. I see that the bully boys at the Department of Financial Services have extracted their pound of flesh from Standard Chartered yet the perpetrators of 2008 have got off scot free. Defend that sonny!!

Oh my... I seem to have knocked you off your soapbox! You were saying something about how you support non-anonymous movements and message boards, and how you thought it was a great idea and everyone should move toward that. It didn't sound like you thought this should be a choice, it sounded like you thought it should be what we "move to" and embrace, as a matter of policy for all.

I didn't go spastic, I just sarcastically agreed with your point! Sorry that confused you.

Taking action against the perpetrators of 2008 does not help them discredit London as the world's top financial centre. New York wants the title. How dare the UK be better than us!!!

Then you can't read.

WOW!! Me and Dixie accually agree on something.. Did hell just freeze over?

Tell me about it, they have gone after Barclays for doing what all the fucking banks were doing over Libor and now that arsehole Benjamin Lawsky has gone after Chartered. The Mafia is alive and well and has moved into banking regulation. The two previous attorney generals, Eliot Spitzer and Andrew Cuomo, both became governor and it is only a matter of time before he has a go as well.

Is BP ever going to admit that they valued money, over safety, and that's why the spill occured?
