Are we all now pro government regulation?

Evince,

Have you ever had a job? My theory is that you have not, but if you have, it was a public sector job. You have no clue how free markets work, because you've never been a participant. Why don't you answer my question.

Technically, Madison was a Democrat. Obviously the beliefs of Madison in no way resemble the policies of the modern Democratic Party. They're polar opposites.

so who was the best republican president in your minds?

Ronald Reagan followed by Calvin Coolidge.

And don't blame Coolidge for the GD. That's bullshit.

It was right around Lincolns time that the 'magnetic shift' happened for republicans and democrats. So Madisons democratic views are what became republican views after the civil war.

Actually, my #2 after Washington is Monroe. Madison was a horrible president, though. And he was a Jeffersonian, while Monroe leaned towards the National Republican (Whig) side of the aisle. Not all James' are created equal...

Madison followed the law to the letter and posited for a limited government. Though he wasn't very successful at it, it is what made him a great republican.

Not entirely accurate. Grover Cleveland believed in small, limited government, free markets and the gold standard. So did William Jennings Bryan, if I am not mistaken. The Dems started going downhill with the election of Woodrow Wilson.

I dunno. Bryan was rather the fundamentalist - if you'll remember, he was the prosecuting side during the monkey trials. He was also a silver Democrat, wanting rampant inflation, as opposed to Cleaveland, who was the gold Democrat.

Yeah, Bryant was an idiot, and a Bimetalist, meaning he supported silver. Cleveland's school of Dems were known as the Bourbans.
