Until 1776, the founders considered themselves Englishman, entitled to the rights and privileges of propertied men under British constitutional law.

I think they probably expected the United States to remain primarily Anglo-Saxon in custom and ethnicity, but they didn't seem to be opposed to small Jewish and Catholic minorities settled here.
