Targeting guns instead of prompting a watershed change in the availability, quantity, quality and effectiveness of mental health care will only delay a gun version but have no affect whatsoever upon a bomber or poisoner or arsonist or saboteur.
As to delaying a shooting at best, no more can be hoped for. The world is full of guns. Their incidence cannot be prevented. This topic can be expounded upon but the post is long now.
The only way to cure this is through a quantum leap in mental health care.
