There weren't any "guards". Just salespeople who were armed, which is common in establishments that sell extraordinarily valuable and highly-portable items. They didn't shoot because there were kids in the showroom.
 
Let this be a lesson to the stupid!

If all you are going to sell are Million Dollar cars and Million Dollar Watches, the doors should always be left locked, and customers should be allowed in by armed guards by appointment only!

It's not like this was just another 99 Cent store!

Victim blaming, lizard lips?

That might fly in a pawn shop, but the customers who buy high-end cars and jewelry might find it off-putting. That means bad for business.

Considering the taxes that merchants in the Loop pay, they might be forgiven for thinking they deserve a reasonable expectation of adequate policing.
