In Northern Ireland, with its land border with the Republic and fragile peace between nationalists and unionists, the EU saw an opportunity to force the UK to stay in its regulatory orbit, or, in the words of one negotiator, lose the province as “the price to pay for Brexit”. This was the corner into which the EU boxed Britain between 2017 and 2019. In the name supposedly of maintaining peace in Northern Ireland, the EU demanded that the UK as a whole must align with EU laws, or there would need to be a trade border within the UK, between Britain and Northern Ireland. Theresa May chose the former but lost the support of her party and was destroyed.

This has been a story of myths, miscalculations and jaw-dropping cynicism. We are told that the Good Friday Agreement prohibits any kind of border between Northern Ireland and the Republic, when it has nothing to say on the subject. We are told that the UK had the responsibility to fix the NI border, or there would be no Brexit deal. But with no deal, a border would have been necessary anyway, and it would have been Brussels, not London, that insisted on full North/South checks. Even now we are told that it is Britain jeopardising the peace process, when it was Ireland and the EU – through their insistence on a legal status for Northern Ireland that lacked the consent of the unionist majority – that disrespected the Good Friday Agreement. We are told that the British are the bad guys, while Irish leaders ignore their treaty obligation to respect Northern Ireland’s place in the UK, and promise, in Leo Varadkar’s words, the “reunification of our island … in my lifetime”.

According to the narrative set in Brussels and repeated by self-hating elements of the British elites, London has been grossly irresponsible, proposing solutions that supposedly reflect “magical thinking”. But this is disproved by the behaviour of the other side. Shortly after the Brexit referendum, Irish officials worked on proposals to make a North/South border in Ireland as light-touch as possible, along the lines first envisaged by Britain and dismissed later by Brussels. Now the EU is about to propose changes to the NI Protocol it previously declared impossible.

According to the Northern Ireland executive, EU border checks in the province represent 20 per cent of all checks across the whole EU external border, even though its 1.8 million people are the equivalent of 0.5 per cent of the EU population. Supply chains have been disrupted, leaving customers with less choice and higher costs. The Government says 200 British companies have stopped supplying the Northern Ireland market, supermarkets have reduced product lines, delivery costs have gone up, and medicines could soon be discontinued because of the difficulties in reaching the small Northern Ireland market.

The EU has behaved as a heavy-handed, hypocritical and imperialistic power. It needs to understand what is at stake, and stop playing with fire. Nothing less than comprehensive change is required.

A potential shortage of gritter drivers could lead to Britain's roads becoming dangerously icy this winter.

The Local Government Association (LGA) has warned some local councils may find their gritting services affected in the same way that bin collection services were impacted last month.

Eighteen councils said they were experiencing disruption to bin collection services in early September, with a lack of HGV drivers for bin lorries partly to blame.

The HGV driver shortage, which according to the latest estimates stands at about 100,000 in the UK, means councils could also struggle to find drivers usually contracted to help tackle icy roads in the winter months, The Sun reports.

Supply chain issues caused by the shortage have already led to widespread problems, including empty supermarket shelves and petrol panic buying.
