Brouhaha over Anti-Bush sign

No biggie. These ladies were overseas. Makes perfect sense to me. The world hates Bush and Bush voters. Heck, when I travel overseas, I'm going to wear a "I did not vote for Bush" button. I plan on making friends and getting along with my world peers. And, in certain countries, it may be in fact lethal to admit you voted for Bush and his war.

Anti-Bush Sign Has Bridge World in an Uproar

In the genteel world of bridge, disputes are usually handled quietly and rarely involve issues of national policy. But in a fight reminiscent of the brouhaha over an anti-Bush statement by Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks in 2003, a team of women who represented the United States at the world bridge championships in Shanghai last month is facing sanctions, including a yearlong ban from competition, for a spur-of-the-moment protest.

At issue is a crudely lettered sign, scribbled on the back of a menu, that was held up at an awards dinner and read, “We did not vote for Bush.”

By e-mail, angry bridge players have accused the women of “treason” and “sedition.”

China... sedition... yeah, that explains it. Only losers like that would freak out so badly about something like this.

It shows that a lot of these right-wing people think that not voting for Bush is treason. They love Bush more than America. Bush hates America. They're the traitors.

:cof1:

lol. I know, its trivial. These gals are cool though.

Anyway, Is it any more trivial, or worse, than your infamous "what's your favorite boob size", or "what's your favorite 'hole' " posts on FP?

:flagsal:

No, its not worse than those. My mom plays bridge, and she dislikes the W, as most same people do. So I feel for the gals, but sweet mother of mercy, who cares?

Anyone not proud to sport a "I didn't vote for Bush" sign is clearly a traitor and shouldn't be allowed to represent the United States in any official capacity.

that's what I was thinking. Who the hell calls these women traitors?

Wait. I know. I've been called a traitor for far less, than what these women did.

The fact that anyone at this point thinks that disapproving of Bush is admirable or brave fascinates me-- it would be brave if 90 percent of the country was against you. When 70 percent of the country agrees, you are just a sheep.

Too silly for words.

Not really. Read the whole thing. They are going to be prevented from making a living, and read the part I am going to paste here. Does the wording of this, and the threat being levied, not remind you of HUAC?

"A hearing is scheduled this month in San Francisco, where thousands of players will be gathered for the Fall North American Bridge Championships. It will determine whether displaying the sign constitutes conduct unbecoming a federation member.

Three players— Hansa Narasimhan, JoAnna Stansby and Jill Meyers — have expressed regret that the action offended some people. The federation has proposed a settlement to Ms. Greenberg and the three other players, Jill Levin, Irina Levitina and Ms. Rosenberg, who have not made any mollifying statements.

It calls for a one-year suspension from federation events, including the World Bridge Olympiad next year in Beijing; a one-year probation after that suspension; 200 hours of community service “that furthers the interests of organized bridge”; and an apology drafted by the federation’s lawyer.

It would also require them to write a statement telling “who broached the idea of displaying the sign, when the idea was adopted, etc.”

Alan Falk, a lawyer for the federation, wrote the four team members on Nov. 6, “I am instructed to press for greater sanction against anyone who rejects this compromise offer.

This country went bugfuck nuts, and they are still there. And that's chilling to me, it might be a silly bridge story to some, but what those words are saying there, makes my blood run cold.

Yeah, it was the nazi brown-shirted reaction these ladies received that caught my attention.

I mean, not only are they being called traitors, but they're facing serious economic sanctions, and being told they have to formally apologize? WTF?

Bridge must be a very conservative, bush-loving "sport". Lame!

They are also being told they have to inform on others. That's the most chilling part to me.

It is.

And as explained in the article, and on olberman last night, these ladies were getting peppered by peers around the world about the iraq war, about bush torture policies, etc. The were very uncomfortable being linked to bush and his policies. I'm sure bridge is like any institution, people talk about politics. I'm sure these ladies want to get along with, and be friends with their international peers.

And like I said in my first post, I would want to get along and be friends with my world peers. I'd make damn sure they knew I didn't vote for bush too. Let the world hate who truly deserves to be hated: Bush voters!

:)

Man, this is one of the worst things I've read in awhile.

What has George Bush done to deserve this kind of blind allegiance, to the point where something as innocuous as "I didn't vote for him" is viewed as traitorous and inspires this kind of response?

These are really dark times, in that respect. I'm just takin' names; I can't believe some of these people call themselves Americans, and that I actually share a country with them...
