Not really. We could even have Pelosi as president and not be a failed state thanks to our separation of powers.

An example of a true failed state would be Mexico.

The separation of powers is a good way to prevent a country becoming a failed state, but it's not a fail-safe. And look where we are now. The economy is destroyed, most of the country is shutdown, and the murder hornets are on their way.
I know that last part isn't Trump's fault, but would anyone be surprised if it was?

The failures being revealed right now are the states that have given their governors too much power, like in Maine and Illinois. Also, New Jersey has gotten pretty authoritarian.

I wouldn't say any of that represents a failed state, but it does show that certain local governments have the wrong intentions. It also shows that certain constituencies need to be more vigilant.

Plenty of other states have loosened up their restrictions, and while the spread of the virus is a concern, it's less of a problem than what happens if you stay closed for too long.

If those states were open, things would be even worse. People still wouldn't be spending money because they're afraid to go outside and the virus would be spreading faster.
Besides, it's not just local economies being hit, it's the entire country.

It depends. NY and NJ do have exceptionally high population densities in their largest cities, but outside of those cities, it's not that dense. Instead of statewide shutdowns, NY and NJ could have instead opted for shutting down their biggest cities while leaving things mostly open in outlying areas. Also, plenty of the less dense areas could manage with social distancing rather than shutdowns.

It is true that the entire country is affected, but we can still look at certain states faring better than others, partially due to less stringent restrictions.

That being said, it is true that the higher population dense areas are being hit the hardest. That should make people question the wisdom of living so close together.

I'd imagine the next year or so will encourage more people to leave big cities. The trend was already ongoing before this, but now we have another reason to do so.

People have been spending money. Ask FedEx or UPS.

California got Covid-19 earlier than Florida, so should have a much higher death rate than Florida... And yet has a much lower death rate. That is because California has worked hard to control the disease.

There is a reason that so many of the upper middle class, rich, and "super rich" want to live in California, and it is because things are happening there. Things are not happening in Arkansas... Or at least good things that productive people want to be part of are not happening in Arkansas.

Sure, businesses that people can engage in while still social distancing are probably doing well. But the economy is still tanking because most business transactions involve being out in public.

California will still be here in November!

Trump will be be History!

He will be the first president in 28 years that FAILS to win re-election!

The death rate in Florida is 85 per million people. The death rate in California is 75 per million. That's not much of a difference. Similarly, the testing rate per million is slightly higher in Florida (27,726) than in California (26,969).

California did shut things down quickly, but the end result doesn't seem to be that different.

While parts of California are certainly more entertaining than Arkansas, there's been a mass exodus of working class and poor out of California. It may be a very socially liberal state, but economically, it's about as corporatist as possible. The rich come there not just for entertainment but for the fact that the local governments heavily favor them over the working class.

You can't live comfortably in San Francisco without making at least 7 figures, for example. This is largely driven by extremely corrupt zoning laws that don't allow the market to meet demands.

L.A. isn't much better, with one of the largest homeless populations in the country.

So while California surely pays lip service to whatever identity group is the flavor of the month, it is a terrible place to live if you're blue collar or even middle class.

I agree, ya'll vacation in Arkansas, don't come here, we don't need you or your tourist pittance..
