When I say things are happening in California, I mean business is happening. Advancements in science and technology are happening. It is the place to go when you want to make money. Even in the age of the internet, it is hard to be relevant in Arkansas. Why do you think so many tech startups continue to happen in California?
I have priced it out, and you can very comfortably live on a six figure salary, so you exaggerate.
Here is my question, why are so many people so desperate to live in San Francisco that they would drive up the prices so much? Why are so many people able to afford those high prices?
California has a problem that people only want to live between the coast and the mountains, much like Manhattan has the problem it is a small island. The land is limited in both places, but why is it so valuable anyway?
If you want to live somewhere cheap to live, have you thought about moving to Mexico?

Actually "Walt" you can make six figures in SF and be considered "low income" and qualify for subsidized housing. People come here for the natural beauty and opportunity, if you want to be in the tech world this is the place to be. California has plenty of land, we choose to deem a large potion of it off limits for development. And for that land we do allow to be developed we have strict density laws that inhibit what can be built. So there is a large artificial constraint which drives up prices.

California is the 5th largest economy in the world, and its impact on culture and technology is arguably unparalleled. While you may disagree with the political preferences of the majority of its residents, California does in fact have a functioning government. It is not a "failed state."

I have priced it out, and my family and I could live a good life there with $400k a year income, so mid six figures. Barely six figures, or 100,000 would be a little more rough.
Part of the reason it costs so much is it is so financially beneficial to be there. The same with NYC. These are places that people are trying to outbid each other to be, because they will make a lot of money being there. If you do not want to make a lot of money, move to Arkansas. I hear the trailer parks there are cheap.
On the east coast, there are hundreds of miles between the coast and the mountains. On the west coast, there is not much land between the coast and the mountains. There is a lot of cheap land in Death Valley (as an extreme example), but who really wants to live there. If you want to live in San Francisco or its suburbs, there are some extreme geographic limitations on you.
That is a huge problem, and it is happening almost everywhere (just not as bad as in California). Current homeowners have the right to vote, so try to keep their house values as high as possible. Future homeowners obviously get no say. No one seems to care that younger people are getting frozen out of home ownership.

I agree with you about California's outstanding natural beauty from the glorious surf beaches in the South that inspired "The Beach Boys" during the 1960's, to the stunning features of Yosemite National Park in the Centre of the State, to cruising the California One Highway and the delightful changing landscapes of vineyards in the wine-making districts making districts, etc; and the list of beautiful places to see and visit goes on and on. If you're a tourist visiting the state to check out this stuff, that's one thing; but being able to afford residing in a comfortable family home in California, so you have ready access to the state's great beaches and bays and national parks, etc; is another.
What was the Californian middle-class is leaving the state en masse at an alarming rate; so the social class structure is becoming increasingly 3rd World, that is, there is a thinnish elite layer at the top of the social hierarchy that is comprised of very wealthy individuals, then directly beneath this is are the masses of blue-collar workers, unemployed, poor, welfare dependants and the members of the underclass (criminals of all description, prostitutes, etc). This is what the social hierarchy of Mexico is like: there is no bone fide middle -class in Mexico, just an upper eschelon of the very wealthy which includes ALL of the country's politicians and many of its senior bureaucrats most of whom are notoriously corrupt and beneath them millions of plebs and member of the criminal/antisocial underclass.
Sure, the Californian tech world is very advanced and sophisticated and successful. But that doesn't mean it necessarily opens up prosperous opportunities for every man and his dog. The people who work in the tech industry are highly skilled; those who make good money in it are highly-educated elites who have a naturally high aptitude for science and technology and typically a high IQ. They are talented specialists in mathematics, quantum physicists, high-powered electronic engineers, computer programmers , expert program coders etc. They were, in short, characteristically smart, upper middle-class (or above) kids who had wealthy parents with enough money to send them to top American Universities and cutting edge STEM Research institutes.

You can definitely live a good life here on $400K. Now, if you have a family and want to buy a home in a good neighborhood you're going to have to earn that amount for multiple years. I've seen it all too often, young people here making good money but understandably want to live it up and they go out to (fancy) dinners on a regular basis, go to events and shows and travel etc. Throw in half your money goes to taxes and next thing you know you look around and see little left in your bank account. So it takes discipline.
Drive around the East Bay or down 280 and you'll see there is plenty of land to develop if we so desired. Additionally, much of SF is actually zoned for single family hence my comment about density (or the lack thereof). And NIMBY's are evil. They may profess to be enlightened and progressive or whatever it may be but at the core NIMBYism is the ultimate F You I've Got Mine attitude and while not unique to us it is very prevalent in SF and the Bay Area. (I'm not naive, I understand that people move into neighborhood's for a reason and generally don't want to see them change. That's human nature. Doesn't make it right though.)
