It can.

But the problem is that too many Americans do not believe in democracy.

That is the problem. You cannot unify a nation if a large minority does not even want a democracy.

the country has never been unified in its history the unity thing went out the window when the United States bought Catholic Louisiana and it's been non-unified ever since. The country is in the process of traditioning from the old school Christian values to the new school human values. The idea that fundamentalist Christians will ever unify with atheists is absurd. The idea that lgbtqia will ever unify with people based on hate is absurd.

The Enlightenment in Europe was about overthrowing the power of the Church. Not to make religion illegal but to make it secondary to the authority of the political state.

Lets hope that the fundamentalist Christians die off, and don't get replaced.

And that's a sort of philosophy our country is founded on but has never really totally been followed

It’s an older article but the truth seems to remain constant. That as unbelievers age, many more of them become believers than the other way around. It is something I constantly research.

It’s ironic, but it actually takes a measure of faith to believe [and believe is the operative word] that humans are just a fancy arrangement of atoms.

I think it’s also true that people *generally* become more conservative as they grow older.

It’s also interesting that in a thread on unity people would be talking about how great it would be if older Christians would just die off faster lol.

They need rid of Christianity. I think that’s been tried a time or two. It didn’t end well.
