Carter 39 Gaining A New Revered Reputation

Hello cawacko,

That's my perception of it. Carter was a beacon of virtue. Reagan was a flashpoint of hatred for liberals.

LOL, what?! What did either of those people have to do with how people voted in California in the Pete Wilson-Kathleen Brown ‘94 Governors race, the ‘96 Clinton-Dole race or the ‘98 Gray Davis-Dan Lungren races? You know Jimmy Carter was from Georgia right?

I'm not saying Reagan was solely responsible for CA going blue. I am saying he had a hand in it, drove people away from the conservative side. As president, Reagan fired 11,000 striking Air Traffic Controllers. That rallied a lot of unions against him.

So that act caused people to vote Democratic in California 15 years later? Yeah, that’s definitely it dude.

Edit: let me change that. Reagan did that in ‘81. Starting in ‘83 Republicans held the Governorship for 16 straight years. But that ended in 1999 because Reagan fired those controllers in ‘81.

I appreciate the humor my man.

Recapping our conversation, I stated it was my opinion that Reagan's decisions contributed to California turning blue. You kept pressing for specific instances. I gave a few. And now you're trying to draw a direct line from the examples I gave to the bluing of California, not seeing any cut and dried direct link. I have said all along the direct link won't be found.

Conservatives tried to claim Reagan was loved by all. But that's just their imagination of what they want to believe. Reagan generated a lot of opposition over the years with many very objectionable actions. I think the bluing of California shows the good people there had enough of the BS of the right. Yes, it took years for that to happen. That's my observation.

And the same thing is happening in Texas right now. The more controversial Abbott becomes, the more people will be galvanized to vote blue. Will Texas go blue immediately in the next election? Probably not. But that doesn't mean the outrageous actions of Abbott won't have a hand in it when/if it happens.

So you’re arbitrarily picking events and claiming that’s what drove people to vote 20 to 30 years later.

And if Texas stays Republican the next 20 years but goes blue in 2040 you’re saying it’s because of Abbots actions today.

As stated you don’t live here and clearly have no idea what drives California politics. Quite frankly you’re speaking out of your ass.

I did not say the things you are paraphrasing. You've created a straw man out of my posts and given it a severe thrashing.

Probably because you're uncomfortable admitting that Carter really did do a good job as president, and it's probably bothersome to you that he is so honest and virtuous and there are no contemporaries like him on the Republican side who could possibly compare to his level of morality.

Have you bought into the whole right wing propaganda machine hack job on Carter?

You can talk about Reagan and Carter as Presidents all you want. Have at it, I don’t care. I responded to your comments about why California turned blue. You’re not from here and you clearly don’t have a clue. (which one could say is understandable not living here. There are many states where I can’t speak to their local politics and I took would be speaking out of my ass). But you keep doubling down on things that happened years or decades before trying to claim they were the cause of the change in the ‘90’s. You’re talking out of your ass

It seems you are a bit fixated on this distraction from the actual thread subject.

Still thrashing away at the straw man you created, I see.

What is not being said speaks louder.

Such as much of anything to say about Carter.

Does that mean you really can't get behind the outrageous right wing hack job done to his reputation?

Perhaps it is assuming too much of you to comment on the actual topic established in the OP?

You made the claim Reagan being Governor is a big reason California turned blue. How am I creating a straw man by responding to your claim? I repeat myself, you don’t seem to have a good understanding of what has driven California politics so are just choosing random things.

I said factor, not reason.

Paraphrasing my post is creating a straw man.

When a politician campaigns and takes office with extreme views it tends to motivate the other side. That's my view. I think it happened like that in California. I never claimed he was the reason. Your word.

I said factor.

If you identify with America as much as California, then you should at least have some opinion of Jimmy Carter. You entered a discussion about Carter. But so far, all you want to talk about is the guy who came later.

We would have been better off as a country if we had reelected Jimmy Carter in 1980.

It was a mistake. The voters fell for shallow instant gratification. They didn't want to do the right thing and conserve. They were more into image than substance.

"Human identity is no longer defined by what one does, but by what one owns." - Jimmy Carter

And he was right.

He was so right.

We totally messed up by cutting him loose after just one term.

So Reagan’s views were so extreme, according to you, that California elected Republican Governors for 16 straight years from ‘82-‘98.

We can go in circles all day long. You clearly have no idea about what drives California politics and the fact that you keep referencing Jimmy Carter, someone from Georgia, shows that.

Hello!

We are in a thread ABOUT CARTER.

Since you won't discuss Carter, I am left to guess how you feel about him.

I think he really did an awesome job.

In a thread about Carter, that you started, you brought up California turning blue. As far as I’m aware those two have little to nothing to do with each other.

I have a four year old screaming her head off early on a Saturday morning so I can sit here all day as a distraction. You don’t seem to have any understanding why California turned blue and are just making things up because it fits a narrative you want to tell.

I don't think there is a single reason. There were many factors.

California already had a huge liberal presence. Look at all the awesome liberal music to come out of there. The Grateful Dead.

Eazy E, Too Short, MC Hammer, Ice Tea, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and the list goes on are all from California. Not really sure what you think that has to do with the political turn California took in the mid '90's.

It was a gradual transition which had a lot of factors pushing it.

Hello cawacko,

That’s a very vague answer. It’s something someone who doesn’t live here and doesn’t really know would say.

If you're so sure you know why then why don't you tell us.

Obviously you think only someone who lives there can know anything about California.
