Change The Constitution. Make Impeachment Votes Secret Ballot.

Hello Flash,

Sounds like you're making a good case for secret ballots.

It is partisan because members of Congress support their party's president. They don't support him any less if they are voting in secret. If they don't support him they can vote against him like Romney did. If the founders didn't expect it to be political they wouldn't have given the function to a political body.

A secret ballot might have changed Johnson's conviction but it would not have affected Clinton or Trump.

You make a good point. At least one presidential impeachment in three shows it would make a difference. America deserves that difference. History doesn't paint Johnson as a very good president. We would have been better off without him.

I haven't follow the thread so my apologies if this has already been discussed. For the sake of discussion let's say all future impeachment votes are secret. Clearly the media and voters and going to guess how Senators voted. And voters will ask Senators how they voted. Will there be something in the amendment that states Senators can't share that info? And there are very few secrets in Washington, how do we know that the vote will never be leaked?

Good point. If the president tried to defeat the Senator(s) that voted to convict him, he might go after the wrong ones trying to guess who it was--Romney, Collins, Gardner, Murkowski, Alexander, McSally? These were all possibilities listed by Newsweek.

Trump would have been convicted under a secret vote.
Even though I want him removed,I didn't want a secret vote.
I wanted to see who were cowards

I Imagine if we can't change the constitution for the electoral college, we can't change it for impeachment.

Hello cawacko,

Assume there is a way to do the vote so that each Senator may vote either way, only once, and the tally will not be recorded. Suppose they are all issued just one ballot. Check it either way, fold it and one by one, upon being called come forward and drop one ballot into the box. The number would be carefully counted to ensure no extra votes or none missing.

They would be free to say anything they like about it, if they wish to, but not required to. People could guess who voted how but they would not necessarily know. The media could make no certain claims of voting results because none would exist.

And if he were removed from office his words would become moot. A removed president would not be given the respect of a current or other ex president. He would be the disgruntled fired worker. With a secret ballot the fear of retribution would be removed because nobody would have to know how each Senator voted..

Hello Marxist Mason,

Trump would have been convicted under a secret vote.

Revenge is a shallow endeavor. It would be better if he were convicted and removed. We already know most of the remaining Republican party is under the spell of the cult. Seeing who it is, definitively, is not worth giving up a conviction.
