The OP is a very cool & interesting read.
It's easy to think of things with some nostalgia, but in general, it's also pretty easy to transition. I love books, and I really love libraries, but once you get used to something like the kindle, it's actually quite an improvement. It was the same w/ the ipod, and with any one of dozens of innovations we've seen over the past decade or so.

Good grief. From driver's licences to building permits there are things people have to pay for. Do you want people building and selling houses that fall down?

It would utilize the planet's resources to the best benefit. An example I mentioned earlier was if oil was reduced in price food wouldn't be turned into fuel.
Another example is if agricultural advancements were given to the tribes in the Amazon they wouldn't have to cut down as much rain forest.
The planet is run in a piece-meal style. Proper planning does not have to be oppressive. In fact, it would be the opposite. Everyone would benefit.

Only if you use publicly owned hospitals/clinics. It's the same as using our publicly owned roads. If you want to use them you have to be finaincially responsible to use them. You can always opt out and not drive on publicly owned roads. Conversly, if you get sick you can choose not to use publicly owned hospitals or clinics and use privately owned ones. Since about 85% of hospitals and clinics are publicly owned, good luck with that. If you want to access our publicly owned hospitals and clinics then we have to right to make sure your not a free loader and that you have the required financial responsibility (i.e. insurance) needed to support our public health care system at a reasonable cost. If you want to access our publicly owned health care facilities with out the required financial responsibility then you free loaders should expect to be fined. Why the hell should the tax paying public pay for your financial irresponsibility?

no, they do not. and don't try to tell me that they reduce the chances of said accidents, deaths, and sub standard building because they don't.
If people choose to be irresponsible in their actions, they should be forced to pay for the consequences of their actions.

Of course sub-standard building results in deaths. They are laws governing earthquake standards, snow loads on roofs, fire escape access, electrical wiring standards so houses do not burn down....
Obtaining a permit informs the town you are doing construction/renovation and an inspector visits to check the place/work.
