It's called economic nationalism and self preservation, relying on Chinese supply chains is national suicide, not only do we need to stop relying on China but we should be sanctioning China and disincentivizing companies from doing business there.

China doesn't practice free trade their economy is a giant ponzi scheme, most of their claimed assets are actually non-performing and they contribute nothing to global R&D and instead just steal the IP developed by the industrial democracies. One belt one road isn't free trade, it's economic colonialism.

It's more than just that, Soviets were a leader of patents in the 1980's....

Soviets also had numerous Space tech, like the first Satellite, first man into space, first Space station, first Lunar rover, first Venus probe etc.
