Incidents like this are really indicative of where Christianity stands in relation to the rest of the world - way in the past. They are the kind that consider unprovable assertions to be absolute truth, so it's no surprise that Christian parents would behave like this.
Personally, I'm grateful to have been born in a non-practicing household. Granted, I took a really weird path through my childhood that left be about as anti-Christian as they come - but I do think that the passive guidance from my parents has been been the best way of instilling in me the positive values of their religion. I know many folks who didn't have such luck with parenting. Usually, I've found, the parents who try to force a religion upon their children do more harm than good. This poor child is just another victim of hard-line Christian parenting.
