$270k is what they might on a single big night out, or the docking fee for the yacht in a popular port for one single weekend.

Thomas could definitely afford to fly First Class, on his own dime, but then he would have to rub elbows with the other First Class folk. He ain't about 'dat poverty' life.

If he wants to live the lavish life of a billionaire, he should have become a law partner at a major New York law firm, he shouldn't have been seeking government employment.

If the guy really wants lavish private yacht vacations with servants and personal chefs in the South Pacific, if he wants to send nephews to elite private boarding schools, he shouldn't have been actively looking for government employment. The guy could have a lucrative gig at any elite private law firm or investment bank in the country.
