It's well-known that King was high on cocaine for most of Maximum Overdrive's production, and many - including King himself - feel that fact contributed to just how bad the movie turned out.

I've seen people in government copping heroin one night and on the TV next day talking to the reporters.
That's just the regular stuff, now if you get into that Big Pharma manufactered super-addictive stuff, that's a death sentence.
I can probably name 9 people I used to know that died from that stuff. It kills like..almost always.
What is it they call that stuff? Oxys and Roxys? That's the death drugs there.

I snorted heroin for a couple years. A GF of mine got me started with it, and then I got to doing a little more than I would have liked because she liked it.
Not injecting it, just sniffing it.
So one night she made this awesome platter with cheeses and grapes and celery and stuff, and I had some and it was good!
We rented a good movie..I think Alyssa Milano was in it.."Stripteaser", maybe..?
It's about what strippers experience.
Then we split a pack and I puked it all up.
Right there and then I decided that drug was bullshit and never did it again.
She got away from it too, by moving to another state. God bless her!
I would like to think my example helped her get away from it as well, even though I can't pork her anymore!

I was too young at the time.
