The Biden administration is set to unveil new environmental regulations that would force U.S. automakers to sell electric vehicles over their gas-powered counterparts, a move experts say will kill jobs and bring major supply chain issues.President Joe Biden's Environmental Protection Agency will announce on Wednesday a proposed rule to limit tailpipe emissions. That rule, according to the New York Times, will impose a strict emissions limit on vehicles sold—so strict that it will force automakers to ensure that two-thirds of the vehicles they sell are electric by 2032. "This is a massive undertaking," said Alliance for Automotive Innovation president John Bozzella, who represents U.S. automakers. "It is nothing short of complete transformation of the automotive industrial base and the automotive market."
If the rule is enacted, it would mark a significant escalation in both electric vehicle sales and U.S. environmental standards. Just 6 percent of vehicles sold last year were electric, and Biden in August 2021 signed an executive order calling for half of all U.S. car sales to be electric by 2030, well below the proposal's two-thirds benchmark. The rule would also prompt layoffs for autoworkers in states such as Michigan and Ohio, experts say, because electric cars take considerably fewer workers to build than gas-powered cars.
"We've dealt with the loss of jobs before through technology," United Auto Workers leader Mike DePaoli told the Times, "but when you talk about the speed of this, it's hard to fathom that we won't lose jobs."
In addition to auto industry layoffs, Biden's aggressive transition to electric vehicles would bring major supply chain and infrastructure challenges. China has an iron grip on the minerals required to build electric vehicle batteries, control that helped the communist nation produce 75 percent of the world's lithium batteries in 2021. Widespread electric vehicle use would also require expensive investments in charging stations and power grids, which must withstand skyrocketing demand should millions of Americans plug in their cars rather than fill them up with gas.

Where in the article does it explain how Biden will acquire this unconstitutional power to rule by fiat. This isn't merely regulatory guidance; this is draconian legislation.

Biden can't do this. Don't count on this happening.

We agree the grid is not ready, but disagree that getting the grid ready will lose jobs. Think about it, modernizing the grid will gain jobs, strengthen America, and make exports. The whole world will have to modernize their grid, and if we do it first, we can export our equipment to the rest of the world.

The UAW will fight this because of jobs lost by car manufactureers layoffs. The jobs for taking away farmland for solar panels will be temporary

I would expect that for many, the ICE vehicles will become like better versions of cars in Cuba. That is, people will start putting more effort and money into restoration and repair of older ICE vehicles rather than switch to EV's.

One thing about solar panels is they have to be maintained, which means solar panel jobs go on forever.

As for jobs manufacturing cars for export, those might be automated, but you know what jobs will definitely go away, cars that cannot be exported.

No, those that make gasoline powered cars will make electric powered cars. Or we can stop making cars for export, and then those making gasoline powered cars will make nothing.
 
I think it will really depend on several things.

Who controls the presidency for the next decade or so

Whether the early adopters can even make the transition work. That is to say, California forces the switch (which they're doing) and it turns into a total cluster fuck of a disaster with not enough power, not enough vehicles to come close to meeting demand, etc.

The general state of the economy.

It might be forced through, or it may become so big a national disaster of a cluster fuck, that the politicians are forced to drop the whole idea because they are looking at being turned out of office wholesale if they don't.

The reason we pay workers is because they do a job that is worth paying them for. I know this concept is alien to Republicans; they think workers get paid out of the goodness of managements heart, but it is not so.

So if workers are working on cars that cannot be exported, those are workers that will be laid off. That is just the way of the world. So we need to make sure they are working on cars that can be exported.

There is no secret "set up" where workers get paid whatever happens to the stuff they make.
