Conservative Myth: "Minimum Wage Was Never Meant..." - OPEN DISCUSSION THREAD

Republican's idea of the minimum wage....

"I would pay you even less- If I could"!

Naturally they are opposed to it, and I just explained why!

People! Hateful politics is not rocket science!

Nothing hateful about wanting to pay someone what their skills are worth. It's hateful for someone with such low skills they can't support him/herself to demand they be paid more for their failures.

My idea of the minimum wage is that it is a price control.

The goal of any business is to maximize profits. Minimizing expenses is part of what it takes to achieve that goal. Payroll is one such expense. People get paid according to the value that they bring to the company.

I oppose minimum wage laws. They are price controls. Price controls inevitably lead to shortages of some sort.

YOU are the one full of hate, not me.

I oppose minimum wage laws because others have determined how much of someone else's money should be paid.

Hello Flash,

It has been bandied about for YEARS in the media, the internet and chat rooms. Here is a comment from JPP:

"Minimum wage jobs allow people to acquire skills and experience. I'm for increasing it to somewhere around $11 - $13/hour, but it shouldn't be a "living wage," as the whole point of entry-level positions is to allow inexperienced workers to expand their skills and receive promotions accordingly.

And THIS is why there should be NO minimum wage at all... These types of jobs teach (typically younger people still in school or whatever) the value of a dollar, work ethic, responsibility, and etc...

Having a minimum wage (aka, "price control") only creates shortages of various types. It cuts down on these types of jobs and/or leads to "overqualified" people working them instead of the people who they were meant for... It also cuts out a good way for people to enter the workforce and "get their feet wet".

Hello gfm7175,

And THIS is why there should be NO minimum wage at all...

That's how it was with the lords and the serfs who wore rags and lived in dirt floor shanties. Not the picture of a 'great' America.

These types of jobs teach (typically younger people still in school or whatever) the value of a dollar, work ethic, responsibility, and etc...

What it teaches them is they are being ripped off and the effort is not worth the pay.

If the economy was really doing well for everyone there would not be any overqualified people working minimum wage jobs.

It also cuts out a good way for people to enter the workforce and "get their feet wet".

The minimum wage is not causing that. Offshoring, systems engineering, job description modification, and automation are causing overqualified displaced workers to work minimum wage jobs. IOW CAPITALISM is causing that.

How are they being "ripped off"? They are making precisely the amount that they agreed upon with their employer...

If the economy was really doing well for everyone there would not be any overqualified people working minimum wage jobs.
Under Obama, this was an issue... Under Trump, this is less of an issue... If minimum wage were abolished, this wouldn't be an issue at all...

And what are THOSE things being caused by??? Yup, you guessed it... PRICE CONTROLS (aka, "minimum wage laws"). Price controls always create shortages like that...
