Court Clears Way for Egg Rights Showdown

By P. SOLOMON BANDA
Associated Press Writer

DENVER (AP) -- The Colorado Supreme Court cleared the way Tuesday for an anti-abortion group to collect signatures for a ballot measure that would define a fertilized egg as a person.

The court approved the language of the proposal, rejecting a challenge from abortion-rights supporters who argued it was misleading and dealt with more than one subject in violation of the state constitution.

If approved by voters, the measure would give fertilized eggs the state constitutional protections of inalienable rights, justice and due process.

I'm cracking up. I love the title!

It's started..............now I feel the fear.....I hope I can get out of here and retain my sanity. I know it's going to be hard (boiled) but..damnit!!! It's happening!! Please no! Not me! Please no! :o

These eggs should be protected. The elitists should not be allowed to create and destroy human life for scientific research. That's human testing. I guess I have to start a new group P.E.T.O.P. People For Ethical Treatment Of People.

You people are sick.

This is ridiculous.
Of course it is. These people aren't exactly sane, though, you know. They constantly violate at least four of Grind's cardinal rules just by breathing. ;) *

I'm actually glad this has finally made it into the courts. My point to them has always been that saying life begins at the moment of conception is every bit as arbitrary as saying it begins at birth. The sperm and ovum are both alive and human before the moment of fertilization.

To be clear, what's wrong with these people is not that they believe a zygote has full legal and moral rights. What's wrong with them is that they want to force everyone else to accept their moral judgment. They're a particularly nasty flavor of authoritarians.

* Actually four, now that I think about it: 1, 3, 4 and 5. http://justplainpolitics.com/showthread.php?t=6698

why are people charged, convicted and sent to prison for killing a zygote ?

But neither of them separately are capable of developing into full human. Any mass of cells which IF LEFT ALONE will develop into a human, is a human.

sorry. You're an idiot.

Oh, brother.

Even after a human is born it's a "mass of cells". Are cells better because they are older ?

If a fertilized egg is legally defined as a human being, you better be prepared to throw women and doctors in jail for charges of first degree murder, when they get abortions.

I frankly would like to see the republican platform call for criminal murder charges, and imprisonment for women who get abortions. That will be a winning platform.

Don't get all partisan on me. Why are older masses of cells given rights when younger masses of cells aren't ?

Because in the entire course of human history, no society has ever deemed a fertilized egg, to be the equivalent of an actual person.

Your turn: If you think a fertilized egg is the legal equivalent of a human being, do you support murder charges, and prison sentences for women if they get an abortion? And if not, why not, since you consider eggs to be human beings?
