Rev. Eric Freed was found dead in the rectory at St. Bernard Church. This is the suspect

Authorities have taken into custody a California man who they believe killed a Roman Catholic priest in a church rectory, the police chief said.

Bullock wasn't unknown to local authorities; in fact, he'd been in custody earlier on the same day that Freed was found dead.

On New Year's Eve, deputies responded to reports of a person "acting strangely".

They went to the scene and arrested Bullock for public intoxication, taking him to a jail where he was rejected due to his erratic behavior.

Bullock was then moved to a nearby hospital where he became more agitated and had to be physically restrained by deputies.

He was eventually booked into a jail shortly after 4:30 p.m. that day, staying there for over 8 hours before his release at 12:43 a.m. on January 1.

Less than two hours later, police got a call about a suspicious person at St. Bernard Church. Officers found Bullock but, as he wasn't "intoxicated and did not qualify for an emergency psychological hold," didn't detain him but instead referred him to a shelter, Mills said.

At some point in the hours after that, a guard at Freed's church found a person matching Bullock's description on the premises and told him to leave, police said.

It was at 9 a.m. that authorities were called back to St. Bernard, this time after church staff came across Freed -- who officers and a doctor, who happened to be a parishioner, both determined was already dead. There were signs of forced entry.

A tense standoff between an armed man and police ended in murder-suicide. The dead man is connected to several other acts of violence. Police are calling him a one-man crime spree.

28-year-old Robert Hopkins shot and killed a man before barricading himself in a building, forcing a several hours-long standoff with police.

Not only does Hopkins have a lengthy criminal rap sheet, but just in the last two weeks police say he’s committed a number of crimes.

On December 28, Hopkins stole a vehicle. When confronted by the owner, Hopkins opened fire.

January 8, police say Hopkins carjacked a sedan.

That same day, he attempted to sexually assault a female driver.

“He got into the vehicle, immediately pulled out a handgun and requested a sex act from the driver. The female refused, so he made her get out of the car,” police said.

Three Covington teen-agers were arrested on charges of taking a gun to a high school basketball game in Slidell, authorities said Saturday. Police said tipsters had warned of a potential confrontation at the game, but the teens left the pistol in their car after finding an "overwhelming" law enforcement presence at the gymnasium.

The teens were arrested Friday night outside the Slidell High gym, where the Tigers played Covington High. They were identified as Steven Warren, 18, of 2029 Pinecrest Drive; Rico Bedford, 19, of 716 N. Jackson St.; and Bedford's cousin, Terrence Bedford, 18, 727 N. Claiborne St.

Detective Daniel Seuzeneau, a Slidell police spokesman, said St. Tammany Parish school system officials told police that students had been overheard talking about an altercation pending at the game. Police Chief Randy Smith assigned additional officers and plain-clothes detectives to monitor the contest.

Officers received a tip that Warren, a spectator, was seen with a gun in his jacket earlier in the night, Seuzeneau said. They questioned Warren then found a fully loaded .38-caliber pistol in a vehicle parked outside of the gym.

A 19-year-old accused of opening fire in a central Slidell park in the middle of the day has turned himself in to police and has been booked on an attempted second-degree murder charge, police said.

Witnesses said he opened fire on a vehicle that was parked at the corner of Campbell Street and Washington Avenue in the Lincoln Park area at around 12:30 p.m.

Witnesses told police Cooper was a passenger in a dark green Chevrolet Suburban, and that he jumped out of the Suburban and began shooting at two people who were in another vehicle.

Cooper then got back into the Suburban and fled.

An argument over texting in a Florida movie theater Monday triggered a retired Tampa police captain to fatally shoot a man sitting in front of him, as about 25 horrified moviegoers looked on, sheriff's officials said.

"Somebody throws popcorn. I'm not sure who threw the popcorn," said Charles Cummings, who, as a birthday treat, was about to watch the movie "Lone Survivor" at The Grove 16 Theater.

"And then bang, he was shot."

Curtis Reeves, 71, has been charged with second-degree murder.

Authorities are looking for a man known only as "Smurf" in connection with the shooting of a 19-year-old.

Investigators interviewed the victim while he was being treated for a gunshot.

The victim told deputies he was driving through the subdivision when he offered a ride to a man he recognized walking through the neighborhood. The victim said he knows the man only as "Smurf".

The victim said he asked "Smurf'' if he had a gun on him, and Smurf pulled out a small handgun. The gun accidentally discharged and a bullet struck the victim.

"Smurf'' is around 19 years old, and clean-shaven with short, close-cropped hair. He has a stocky but chubby build, the victim told the sheriff's office.

The victim told investigators "Smurf'' has a blue and silver bicycle that is missing one foot peg and has no hand grips on the handlebars.

Typically, criminals leave their home to commit crimes.

But one alleged robber preferred to have his victim come to him -- and that was his downfall.

Michael Antonio Long, 20, was arrested for allegedly robbing a pizza delivery driver who came to deliver two pies.

Long ordered the pizza by phone and had it delivered to his home in a mobile home park in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

When the driver arrived, Long and several other men allegedly armed with handguns robbed the man of all the money he had on him, his wallet and the two pizzas he was carrying.

He then showed up and robbed the store at gunpoint. Besides taking the items that he had reserved, he also stole $600 from the register.

Two men are accused of producing convincing forgeries of Super Bowl tickets and other sought-after NFL tickets in a Queens apartment and then selling them, police said.

New York City police charged the men Tuesday in a scheme to forge NFL tickets and parking passes for several playoff games this winter, including the Super Bowl, using a computer, a printer and photo paper, authorities said. They then allegedly sold them on the Internet and on the streets of New York City.

Some fans who purchased Super Bowl tickets "may be in for a rude awakening on game day," Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement.
